I’m not sure what I was really expecting from Lady Gaga for the big Venice Film Festival premiere of Joker: Folie a Deux. I guess I was expecting her to bring a cartoonish energy, to make it all about “Harley Quinn” and retro ‘70s maybe? But Gaga has come into this rollout feeling somewhat subdued. As subdued as she can be in a giant Philip Treacy headpiece/mask. Her gown was Dior… business on top and a decidedly weird goth party at the bottom. Like… did anyone call this? Did anyone think Gaga would roll into Venice with bleached eyebrows, black Dior and a pile of Wellbutrin?
Gaga also made her red-carpet debut with her fiance, Michael Polansky. They’ve been together for about four years and they usually keep everything really private. Did you know that he’s rich? Estimated net worth, by some accounts, of over half a billion. He gave her an enormous diamond engagement ring, which she’s been wearing to all of the events in Venice. He seems fine with letting her have the spotlight, but she also seems to be trying to be more mindful and demure around him.
As for Joaquin Phoenix, I just realized that Rooney Mara did not join him in Venice. At some point, probably in early or mid-summer, she gave birth to their second child. We don’t have any information on any of that, I’m just making assumptions based on the size of her bump back in April. My guess is that Rooney simply didn’t want to travel so soon, and she especially didn’t want to travel with a 4-year-old and a newborn. Joaquin walked the carpet with his sister Rain. Is there a vibe with Joaquin about Rooney’s absence? I don’t know. We haven’t heard anything about them in months, but that’s par for the course. There’s still an open question of exactly why Joaquin pulled out of that Todd Haynes film so suddenly. IDK. Update: Rooney is there in Venice, she just didn’t go to this premiere. My bad.

That’s an extremely ugly hat…thing.
I don’t like much of her outfit here…
I love her outfit. Perfect
That hat reminds me of a modern suspension bridge.
Rooney Mara is in Venice (the Italian outlets and the Daily Mail have the photos), he just didn’t walk the red carpet with her.
While I don’t particularly care for the whole ensemble, I can still appreciate the artistry of it. And I’m happy to see traces of Quirky Gaga again! She’s been so elegantly normal for much of the past few years.
I used to love gaga when she was weird and innovative. Then she did that video with the fruit loops and her yelling that she’s an artist followed by hanging out with the pretentious nyc art scene people. Ever since she looks fake to me, she’s trying too hard to impress. Like with that hat.
Yep, she used to be edgy and unique, now she got try-hard and tiresome. This big ol hat with t he poofy skirt and the no eyebrows just makes me roll my eyes.
I agree. Gaga is performative, pretentious, creative, singular, and in a sea of cardboard cutouts, interesting. I don’t always like what any one person wears but at least Gaga always draws a second look. I hope she never changes. Love the hat.
Not a fan of the black gowns on the red carpet from any of the actors. Too somber and heavy IMO. I think black is more professional and can be worn at pressers and interviews. Doesn’t jell right with the rest of the photo snapping, brightly-lit sunny background. I’d rather see more light, bold, sunny, or neutral colors. Other than that, Lady Gaga looks fine here — she’s Lady Gaga and this is her art, headpiece, gown, and all.
Hot take: I LOVE the hat and dress. I think it manages to be elegant and extremely theatrical. It is perfect for a Venice premiere of a film about a comic book villain. Gaga understood the assignment.
Same!
I love the head piece. It is so theatrical.
Yeah, I appreciate the high drama for Venice. It’s a cool and fun look. And the hat at least covers the bleached brows. I just can’t when anyone bleaches their brows. Even Gaga.
I love it too! It’s captivating to look at!
I love how the hat and the skirt reference a traditional harlequin costume, the bit of high brow camp, on point!
I am vicariously sweating for Joaquin’s sister in that brown velvet gown. Surely it’s ass hot in Venice like it is most everywhere in the Northern hemisphere?
Is this the Joker movie or Maleficent? I love Gaga, but this is a no.
I like the headpiece more than the dress. And wearing them both together is like wearing a chunky necklace with huge earrings.
That is some more hat! It’s an interesting combination of styles. The base is a Juliet cap, while the sweeping upraised wings are very architectural, like mid-century cocktail hats. Then it’s got a very stiff lace blusher (veil) that simultaneously draws attention to and conceals her eyes.
The skirt is very interesting, too. The ruffles remind me of a honeycomb. I saw a skirt like Gaga’s, only upside down from hers. Made for wonderful pockets.
Meanwhile, the bodice is restrained, so as to avoid conflicting with hat and skirt. Discreet and effective jewelry. Superb editing! Extravagant, idiocentric, and elegant. A triumph!
The skirt makes me think of some kind of giant filter, maybe part of an aeroplane engine.
Love the headpiece and skirt. Bleached eyebrows just looks wrong. Like you are missing part of your face. But Gaga looks good here. Definitely helps that I can’t see the missing brows, lol.
I love the hat. If I had places to where crazy sculptural pieces like that, I also totally would.
Joaquin looks rough. Guess having a preschooler and a newborn at age 50 isn’t so easy. or maybe karma catching up to him for abandoning all the people that were supposed to work on his film.
