Snoop Dogg dresses up as ‘He-Man, Baby Shark, whoever’ for grandkids’ parties

Snoop Dogg has was so delightful to watch at the Olympics. You could just tell how much fun he was having, as a torchbearer, spectator, and tourist (his video at the Louvre is so fun). One of the Snoop moments from Paris that went viral was a picture of him tying his young granddaughter’s shoes. Snoop, who has seven grandkids total, recently did an exclusive interview with People about being a grandfather. It should come as no surprise that Snoop brings that same joy to his grandpa duties as he did to his Olympic duties. He even dresses up for birthday parties as characters like He-Man and Baby Shark!

Snoop Dogg has gone by many names, but there’s one that’s reserved just for his grandkids. The rapper, 52, spoke with PEOPLE exclusively for this week’s cover story and shared that fatherhood — and becoming a granddad — is one of the things in life he’s the most grateful for. Snoop is dad to sons Corde, 30, Cordell, 27, and Julian, 26, as well as daughter Cori, 25, whom he shares with his longtime wife and high school sweetheart Shante Broadus.

Alongside his four kids, Snoop is also granddad to seven grandkids, and he admits he’s dressed up as a few major characters for them.

“Papa Snoop, that’s who I am, and I love being that,” he tells PEOPLE. “I be dressing up for their birthday parties, like He-Man, Baby Shark or whoever. I be complaining, but I love it.”

“I love being a grandpa. It’s an accomplishment,” he proudly adds.

In July, Snoop used a wholesome behind-the-scenes picture to reveal how he’s balancing his “grandfather duties” with his many roles at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper was photographed squatting down and tying his granddaughter’s sneakers as she stood up for him.

“Grandpa’s duties while at the Olympics 💕🇺🇸😘🔥,” Snoop captioned the post, which was posted just one day after he carried the Olympic torch through the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis during the opening ceremony.

The little girl’s father, Snoop’s son Cordell Broadus, also posted about the Olympics experience on his own Instagram, sharing the same photo and writing: “Medici Family @ the opening ceremony Daddy O accomplished another side mission the game is to be sold not told… 3 letters DNA ✅😤.”

Back in January, Snoop opened up about the name his grandkids call him for the first time during an appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show, saying that one of his grandkids chose the name.

“That is adorable. What do your grandkids call you?” Hudson asked him.

“Well, he was the first one to name me,” Snoop said of grandson Zion. “He used to call me Papa Noop, because he couldn’t say Snoop, so he started calling me Papa Noop. And then as time went by, he learned how to say Snoop, so now I’m Papa Snoop.”

Omg, I can just picture Snoop dressed up as Baby Shark (or rather, Grandpa Shark) or a Bluey character. He sounds like such a fun grandpa. You know that man has played Keepy Uppy or Featherwand with his grandbabies at some point, too. In the past, while gushing over his grandkids, Snoop has said that his own grandfather was his best friend and he wanted to be that for his own grandchildren. My grandpa was really special to me, too, and I miss him and our relationship every single day. Also, I love that Zion is the one who gave Snoop his grandparent name! I love Papa Snoop, haha. My older son was the first grandchild on both sides and he also named both sets of his grandparents when he was around 20 months. Kids are so funny like that.

I saw part of a segment at the olympics (or maybe read it) where he said he dresses in costumes at his grandchildren’s birthday parties because originally, he’d just show up, and all the other kids’ parents would want photos with Snoop- because he’s snoop. And he wanted to avoid having that attention, etc at the child’s party, so he started dressing in full costumes where no one can see that he is snoop. The kids love it, and people aren’t gathered around him to get Snoop photo ops.

Snoop and Flavor Flav being America’s wholesome grandad/uncle figures is something that blows the mind of 1989 me who watched the Fight the Power video and early 90s me who watched the mtv news coverage of Snoop’s murder trial.

But – i love it so much!!!!

I love that a celebrity as big as Snoop is still with his high school sweetheart.

“Snoop says his wife, Shante Broadus, at first tolerated his pimping. “She went along with it ’cause she know and understand that was an infatuation of mine, a childhood dream, to be a pimp. Look at her daddy,” he says, pointing to the oversize picture of his father-in-law in a red suit beside Snoop and Puff, saying without saying it that her dad’s pimping enabled Snoop’s. “She wasn’t accepting; she was just lookin’ the other way ’cause I never did it in her face. I was never bringin’ bitches to the house.”
