Ella Purnell wore Rabanne at the Emmys: old school glam?

Fallout was nominated for Best Drama this year, which went to Shogun. Ella Purnell was not nominated in the actress category, which was an oversight. She’s mesmerizing in Fallout, and I love her in Yellowjackets too, although that show does not need another season. I think if Fallout was on Netflix or HBO it would be getting a lot more attention because it’s just that good. Aaron Moten is phenomenal too, I would like to see him get a nomination. Plus it’s got Walton Goggins in it! He’s excellent in everything and was nominated for best actor in a drama, which went to Hiroyuki Sanada for Shogun.

Ella was very much the silent screen star in a silver sequin draped v-neck Rabanne gown. We’re going to be seeing her in a lot more shows and movies. She’s a lead actress with character actress range.

Dakota Fanning was nominated for supporting actress in a limited series for Ripley. Her category went to Jessica Gunning for Baby Reindeer. Dakota was lovely in a pale peach strapless Armani. I’ve just seen her this month in this ridiculous movie called The Watchers and in the soapy excellent series The Perfect Couple. She’s so dislikable on Perfect Couple that it shows her incredible range. Her fashion is almost always amazing.

Kathy Bates was part of the villains presenting trio last night, along with Antony Starr and Giancarlo Esposito. She joked that she couldn’t get a date after Misery. I’m really sad that she’s retiring, but I’m excited to see her in the Matlock reboot. She elevates everything she’s in. (Watch Disjointed on Netflix if you haven’t see it yet, it’s goofy funny. Aaron Moten is in it too.) Kathy was also in Armani, in a lovely deep blue sequin gown.

Sarah Paulson was in a cool colorblocked blue, white and black Prada gown with a boxy silhouette. I kind of love this, it’s very cool looking. Sarah wasn’t nominated this year and was there as a plus one for her partner, Holland Taylor. Holland was nominated for supporting actress in a drama which went to Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown.

Eiza Gonzalez was in a pale pink Tamara Ralph gown with a wide bustline and feather boa wrap. This looks a bit cheap to me. She’s so pretty and could pull off so many different looks, but I don’t think this is right for her. Eiza was there to support her Netflix show 3 Body Problem, which was nominated for best drama. (That went to Shogun.) I regret watching that show.

Purnell was hands-down my favorite of the night, from head to toe.

Fanning and Bates also looked very lovely. Paulson’s dress was suprisingly sedate for her. I loved the color.

  2. Mil says:

Gonzales and Rita Ora had the same or very similar dresses. Found that to be funny.

Love the silver gown. But overall, fashion choices were fine. Gomez, Fanning, Pulson, Reese, Laverne looked great.

  3. seraphina says:

Ella’s dress was not flattering – she could have done so much better and Fanning’s dress washed her out. I kinda liked Paulson’s outfit, especially when she stood next to Taylor.
Gonzalez’s bodice did not flatter her at all. It looked off and she could have been fitted with a better dress or bodice style.

Agree with all of this. You can see that Ella is working with better stylists now, but she’s still not quite top tier. That dress felt a little lazy.

And Elle is giving Nicole Kidman in that dress. Almost the same pale color as her skin, completely washes her out.

I loved Ella Purnell in Sweetbitter and I’m really happy that her career is taking off. She is a very talented versatile actress.

Ripley is on Netflix, not Apple TV. I only remember this because it’s one of the few series I watched in its entirety from this year’s slate. I have a lot of catching up to do!

Dakota’s dress washed her out, but it was pretty. That baby pink color is nice on Eiza but the bust is unflattering 😬

  6. K says:

Ella’s gown and styling are perfection to me.

    Kathy Bates
    Holland Taylor

    There is hope after 75!

I love Ella‘s dress but her make up really changes her face and I’m not sure I like it? I wish she had been nominated for Fallout, and I was really rooting for Walton, I love him so much, but I had a feeling it was all Shogun last night.

I like all the other gowns here too, Dacus’s is very pretty and delicate.

  9. SarahLee says:

Holland looks amazing. Sarah, not so much. Love Dakota Fanning, always, though I would love to see her in some color just once. It seems she and her sister always do these very pale looks. They look amazing, don’t get me wrong. I just would love her to mix it up once.

Kathy Bates just gets better looking with age. I really liked the new Ripley. The photography was lovely, and those stories are very interesting. I’ve never read them, but I should check them out.

I love Ella in everything she’s in and would love to see her in more. I think she’s a big screen talent and would put her up there with Flo Pugh as far as range and talent. She looks beautiful. One of my favorites I’ve seen besides Kristen Wiig. I love the silver. I especially love Ella’s styling with this dress.

    Kathy Bates looks terrific!

  13. Kirsten says:

Everyone here looks lovely. No notes.

  14. Grant says:

I love Ella’s dress and I completely agree about the oversight! She was the heart and soul of Fallout and definitely deserved a nomination. It’s not easy to make a bright-eyed, kind of naive, very pretty protagonist likeable but she did it and I was rooting for her from start to finish.

And her character changed with every episode too, dealing with all the craziness that came her way. I never expected to like a show based on a video game I’ve never played, but I thought it was brilliant and I can’t wait for next season!
