Telegraph: Why didn’t Duchess Meghan go to Kamala Harris’s Michigan town hall?

Last Thursday, Oprah stepped into the political arena once again. She hosted a town hall/forum with Kamala Harris in Michigan, an important swing state. Many celebrities Zoomed into the town hall, including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lopez, Bryan Cranston, Chris Rock and more. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not Zoom in. No one was expecting them to. But! It would have been weird if they went the entire election cycle without saying anything, right? Which is why Archewell staff posted a message reminding people to vote and talking, in vague terms, about the stakes of this election. Vanity Fair also reported that Harry and Meghan “have no plans to endorse a candidate right now.” Which makes me wonder if Meghan plans to do a low-key endorsement right before the election. In any case, the Telegraph has combined these two things – the Oprah-Kamala town hall and the Archewell GOTV post – and come up with the biggest question facing the British public in the year 2024: why weren’t Harry & Meghan in Michigan, supporting Kamala Harris? Some highlights from another ridiculous article:

The Michigan town hall: There was no sign of Duchesses For Kamala or Sussexes For Harris. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are, The Telegraph can disclose, deliberately going out of their way to stay out of the US elections This goes some way to explain why the Duchess, despite her close ties to Winfrey, the queen of US television, did not add her endorsement to Thursday’s event, a huge show of support for the Democratic contender in the tightest of presidential races. Other major celebrities did, including such Hollywood royalty as Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Bryan Cranston.

Meghan’s political ambitions: Another reason why the Duchess might have been expected to attend is that for some time there have been reports of her political ambitions, all of them denied. The rumour mill has even gone so far as to suggest that the Duchess made tentative inquiries to replace Ms Harris as senator in California when she became vice-president. The claim has been branded “implausible” and “ridiculous” by sources close to the Duchess.

Meghan’s 2020 call to Gavin Newsom: Four years ago, the Duchess spent an hour on a direct call with Gavin Newsom, the golden state’s charismatic governor and an ally of Ms Harris, to discuss her arrival in Montecito, the wealthy town on the fringes of Santa Barbara that is now home to the Duke and Duchess. The call was made in mid-October, two weeks before the 2020 US election and at a particularly sensitive time. The Biden-Harris triumph left a Senate seat vacant that under convention was in the gift of Mr Newsom to fill. He was under pressure to replace Ms Harris, at the time the only black female senator, with a candidate of the same sex and ethnicity. In the end he plumped for Alex Padilla, the first Latino to represent California.

More details on this mysterious call: Details of the call between Mr Newsom and the Duchess of Sussex remain private but it is thought the Duchess, a former actress in the US hit show Suits, was keen to let the Democratic governor know she was supportive of him. The Duke was also on the call, The Telegraph understands. It is not clear who initiated the call and what precisely was discussed but it likely would have included discussions about security and the logistics of having a branch of the Royal family in California.

Why are the Sussexes’ reluctant to be politically engaged this year? The contrast with four years ago is marked. In September 2020, when Donald Trump was going toe-to-toe with Joe Biden, the Duke and Duchess appeared on camera with a personal appeal to American voters to register in order to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity”. Trump reacted badly. “I’m not a fan,” he remarked of the Duchess before wishing Prince Harry “a lot of luck”. In spring this year, Trump warned that “appropriate action” should be taken if it turned out the Duke had lied on his US visa application over taking cocaine, magic mushrooms and marijuana in his youth…The couple’s reticence to enter the political fray might well be understandable in light of a possible Trump return to the White House. He is not known for being forgiving.

Republicans buy jam too: It is possible that in trying to make the [ARO] business venture work, the last thing the Duchess would want to do is appear divisive by backing one political party over another. Meanwhile the Duke, according to reports, is trying to patch things up with London. The last thing he wants is a further political row to muddy those waters.

Maybe the Democrats don’t want the Sussexes! And then there’s the distinct possibility that the Democrats just don’t want the Sussexes’ support. The Duchess is a figure who is both loved and hated. In a tight election, Ms Harris cannot afford to lose voters, however unlikely that might be as a consequence of an endorsement from the Californian exiles. And then there’s this from a Democratic strategist in California, who knows the governor and the party machine there. “With all due respect to Meghan Markle,” said the source, “given the star power that we have in California, she’s kind of in the minor ranks of them to be honest.” Ouch.

[From The Telegraph]

This kind of obsession is unhealthy from the Telegraph. I know Harry prefers to deal with them, but they’ve shown their asses hundreds of times in recent years. So, let’s break this down. Harry doesn’t vote and can’t vote in America, so he makes a point of not endorsing anyone. Meghan is an American citizen and she votes. She spoke out against Donald Trump eight years ago and Trump and the MAGA cult have attacked her ever since. On the other side, Kamala Harris has been nothing but supportive, and I 100% believe that Meghan is equally supportive of her former senator. The Telegraph is really trying hard to miss the point, which is that it doesn’t matter if Meghan endorses Harris-Walz. The Democrats have a huge amount of celebrity support already, and Meghan’s endorsement really would just be a drop in the bucket. Meghan isn’t Taylor Swift nor does Meghan need to do some Swiftian damage control after publicly hugging a Trump supporter. We know where Meghan stands politically. And we also know that Trump would have his supporters burn Meghan in effigy if she endorsed. Now, all that being said… I still hope that Meghan says something or does something. Every little bit counts. Sometimes you just have to do the right thing, damn the consequences or the heat you might get.

“Please come out and engage in politics so we can bash you for it! We don’t have enough work to do” The Torygraph.

It’s not Meghan’s job to do their work for them. They need to shut up and sit down.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

100% this. No one’s gotdamn business who she supports or votes for.

British rags need to keep their noses out of US politics. And most especially keep their noses out of Meghan’s business.

You UK press rats wanted her sent back to America. You got your wish! You also wanted her to be “irrelevant” per your own published words, Rota.
To make that happen, UK gutter press needs to keep the Sussex’s names OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS, and go back to rattling the gilded cages of the nonworking “working royals”.

      • MichaelaCat says:

They want nothing more than to tie her to Harris.

Conservatives use Meghan to create hate for anything progressive. They know racist, small minded people can’t stand her for being black and successful and a woman. It’s seminar to how they use LGBT people as a scare to have people vote against her interests.

I think it’s wise Meghan is not endorsing. People who like her will already vote Harris. Endorsing will create a tsunami of negative focus on both women, sadly

    • Nano says:

@Lanne exactly!!! If she endorses “omfg she’s trying to be in politics”, if she doesn’t, “why isn’t she saying something…there’s ulterior motive”. It’s disgusting the way the British media f**ck with Meghan.

  2. girl_ninja says:

Meghan PLEASE! Talk about politics! We beg you so we can drag you for it!!! Fucking Telegraph is TeleTRASH.

  3. sevenblue says:

I wrote on the previous article on this before. I don’t expect H or M to endorse anyone. They are still the members of the BRF, they are doing non-political work. Harry worked with senators both from Republican and Democratic party. I think, they want to continue to do that and be non-political. The media wants them to get political, so they write hundred articles about how Charles should strip them off their titles because they got political.

People wanted TS to endorse Kamala, because she did so 4 years ago. Made a documentary about being outspoken politically. Wrote even a song “Only the Young”. If that doc never happened, the swifties would defend her saying, she never endorsed a candidate, everybody should respect that.

  4. Julia says:

I hope Meghan does exactly what she wants to do on her own terms. Endorse a candidate/don’t endorse a candidate. Don’t let anyone bait you into doing anything you are not comfortable with Meghan.

  5. Nicole says:

Meghan and Harry live in California (a solidly blue state). In addition CA has a deep bench, Meghan will not be in US elective office. She and Harry can do more and be more impactful being humanitarian and working private and NGO efforts. Let me say this again: She has WAY more freedom being a private citizen rather than being an elected official. ALSO, she has small children. Why would she do anything that takes her away from them for a protracted amount of time. These people are dense. It would behoove the British to continue to learn basic American geography and a little bit more about Federalism and American politics.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Nicole, I agree with you. Why would she limit herself?

I think it was great that the Archewell Foundation encouraged people to vote. We have no way of knowing if she is writing postcards or something similar. There’s no need for her to endorse or show up at Town Halls. The bm are really getting testy that she won’t do something so that they can smear her.

    • Isabella says:

I don’t get why a California resident would fly to Michigan for a political event. The Brit press doesn’t understand our geography. It’s a huge country.

  6. Pinkosaurus says:

As an American, some of the language use in the article sounds so strange. A senate seat was “in the gift “ of Newsom to fill? He “plumped for” his selection? What?

    • StarWonderful says:

The idea that there was a call b/w Meghan and Newsom about the vacant CA Senate seat is absurd! The British press has no idea about how anything works in America, much less about California.

  7. Neeve says:

They keep talking about her political ambitions, has she ever shown outright interest in this matter?

    • Hypocrisy says:

Absolutely none.. Meghans political ambitions have all been a tabloid lie that the dredge up and reuse because she has spoken out on causes. They need to stop it, it’s part of their “Meghan is power hungry” narrative.

      • Miranda says:

I’m white, so probably not the best person to speak to this, but from the outside, it looks a lot like a flavor of misogynoir. Like just existing as a well-educated, articulate WOC has been deemed inherently poltical and means that she MUST have some ulterior motive.

    • MsIam says:

She wanted to be a diplomat, humanitarian, actress. I’ve never heard or read anything about Meghan saying she wanted to run for political office. You can want to be involved in change and fight for policies you believe in without tossing your hat in the ring. This is just tabloid nonsense even if the Telegraph is not (technically) a tabloid.

  8. Hypocrisy says:

Is Meghan the only Royal that can vote? She doesn’t need to come out and endorse anyone, we can all figure out which candidate has the same values as she does.

  9. Dee(2) says:

This is just them upset that they can’t write articles about how inappropriate she is for being vocally supportive of one ticket. It’s always interesting to me how they report on tabloid created narratives as if they are legitimate things that either Meghan or Harry have said that they wanted to do and were somehow slapped down. She’s never said that she wanted to run for office, and plenty of celebrities have the ear of the governor and senator of the state they reside in that’s not odd at all. It would have been political malpractice for Gavin Newsom not to reach out to them when they moved there in 2020.

    • One of the marys says:

It’s a common technique to write a column and punish her for what she might do or might have done. They’ve as recently done it with coverage of Kate’s video

  10. Jais says:

The Telegraph is ridiculous. Meghan never wanted to be a senator. But whipping up rumors about her is hateful. Let Meghan be. Jeez.

  11. B says:

Meghan may publicly endorse Kamala but I doubt it. She didn’t endorse a particular presidential candidate during the last election cycle she worked with Gloria Steniem to encourage everyone to vote. As co-head of the Archewell foundation she’s working on both sides of the aisle to pass paid parental leave and she’s working on both sides of the aisle to push through legislation that will protect children in digital spaces. For effectiveness its probably best to behave apolitically while encouraging everyone to take part in the democratic process. Especially when its clear based on her values who she’ll vote for. The juice is not worth the squeeze if publicly endorsing Kamala will have conservative media screaming and potentially causing a shut out by Republican Senators and Congresspeople in DC because said media have made it untenable to work with her.

I also would like to note that public endorsements are extremely helpful but so is fundraising, cold calling, canvassing etc. Meghan could be a donor we don’t know. We do know EVERYONE SHOULD VOTE.

    • Dee(2) says:

I would STRONGLY suspect she is a donor and text banker. While money is great for allowing to pay for media time, putting in hours to volunteer that way is also incredibly helpful as this will be an extreme GOTV election.

    • Kingston says:

In an article in VF (IIRC) about the #WinWithBlackWomen group, they listed some of the high-profile women who were foundation members of the group which was started in 2020 and Megan the Duchess of Sussex was listed right there among them as big and bold as you please.

M was a vocal supporter of Stacey Abrams in her run for governor or Georgia in 2020. She donated to her campaign and also phone banked for her. And as we all heard, the minute she returned home to America in that election year 2020, she joined with Gloria Steinem to do phone banking and donating to democratic candidates in addition to encouraging citizens of all stripes to vote, as Archewell has been doing this election cycle.

So all those fucking parasites in britain who want to write about M’s socio-political activism they need not manufacture anything, because theres lots of actual things she’s doing that they can feed on. Fucking vultures.

  12. Louise177 says:

Meghan and Harry have on told people to vote last and this election. Why is the British media (of all people) so obsessed with them not being politically active?

  13. Jan says:

Torygraph knows damn well Harry can’t vote, as if Meghan would ever vote for trump.
The Sussexes met Doug at a charity event NYC and they were quite chummy.
NYC week started last night for Harry.

  14. Gail Hirst says:

breaks my heart honestly. This is the garbage that has swayed my family members still in England. The Telegraph is the paper they read…and trust. If they lie about H&M then what other lies are they filling my family’s head with? Sad and angry are not my favourite a.m. coffee feelings. But here we are. Can’t trust a trusted news outlet. Damn all their black, greedy hearts to hell. Sad no more. Now just angry. Good Monday Mourning.

    • lanne says:

If it’s worth it (and if they are too far gone I understand if it’s not–you can’t reason someone out of a belief they didn’t reason themselves into): what specifically did Meghan do that’s worth their ire? What “protocols” did she break? What specific wrongs did she do? did she accept bags of cash from foreign interests? Pay 12 million dollars to a victim of Jeffrey Epstein? Get caught on tape trying to see access to a member of a royal family? Get caught on tape badmouthing the Queen? Do any of the “transgressions” they can name rise to the level of things the royals have all done? Are they just accepting the word of people who never wanted her here in the first place, and thought they could chase her off?

It may be my own naivete, but I assume a lot of the British hatred of Meghan is less maga craziness and more lazy acceptance of the status quo. But I may be underestimating how malignant the Qanon/MAGA/Brexit cancer is in the UK

  15. Maxine Branch says:

So easy to say damn the consequences when you have not sat a day in Meghan’’s Shoes nor have suffered as she has just from falling in love. The GOTV initiative Archewell did was excellent and needed. Tapping folks who have not voted before as well as reminding folks to vote is huge to me. It has been obvious to us Sussex supporters that Vice President Harry as well as her niece have a warm relationship with Meghan. As a staunch Democrat, I too support Vice President Harris and I have been canvassing in my community for her. As a Sussex supporter, I support whatever position Meghan takes re this very important election for US democracy.

  16. aquarius64 says:

Admit you’re starving for content BM. Break the original contract and report on the Waleses.

  17. blueberry says:

At this point, just encouraging people to vote is anti-MAGA. Republicans love people not voting. It’s ridiculous the idea she’d want to be in politics and obviously said derisively by the BM along the lines of: who does this Black woman think she is?

  18. MsIam says:

Meghan encouraged people to register and vote and she was accused of “ballot harvesting” of all things. I can only imagine the insanity if she actually endorsed a candidate. Since the other side is actively engaging in voter suppression, it should be pretty obvious who Meghan is supporting and voting for. GMAB.

  19. One of the marys says:

I wish there was en eye rolling meme for Meghan haha

  20. Amy Bee says:

Some people are going to be really disappointed when she doesn’t endorse Kamala. Just remember she didn’t endorse Biden either but she and Archewell did encourage people to vote.

  21. Kingston says:

It never ceases to amaze me how every little pissant feels its ok for them to take a swipe at a woman who never has a bad word to say about anyone.

Having said that, however, I do not believe for one minute that the so-called writer of this article in the Torygraph which was quoted in the blurb to this thread, spoke to any American Democratic strategist about Meghan.

Given how corrupt every one of those crowbaits on Fleet street is, it is more than likely that the quote in the Torygraph from a supposed “Democratic strategist in California” was pulled from the stank arse of the little shidt who wrote it.

  22. Mina_Esq says:

But also, from a strictly practical perspective, showing up 3 time zones away in Michigan wouldn’t have made a lot of sense. Midwest isn’t their demo.

  23. Lavendel says:

I think the reason Meghan isn’t taking a public stance by name is because she’s aware of how the press would attack the president-elect if she did. There’s already been this disgusting headline that the future president is the Meghan of politics. It’s quite clear that the Sussexes are behind the Democratic president. I think Meghan will clearly be behind Kamala Harris in the next few years.

  24. mightymolly says:

When has Megan ever both-sides anything? Her leanings are as clear as day. And I don’t doubt they’ve given the Harris campaign a decent sum. (Okay, I realize that’s public record, but there’s gotta be a way that high profile people make donations and keep them out of the paper).
