It’s always funny when we get a glimpse of Prince Harry’s California life in the middle of a particularly toxic newscycle over in Isla de Saltines. They’ve been screaming about how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are “going their separate ways professionally” for weeks now, and then…Harry turns up at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch with some friends. Harry was filmed catching waves and perfecting his surfing form by his good friend Raimana Van Bastolaer. Raimana wrote: “In tahiti, we still call you Prince harry but at surfranch, it’s my Brother,. It was an honor to have you surf with me.” He also tagged Kelly Slater and Michael Anders. Harry is such a natural athlete, I have no idea how quickly he picked up surfing but his form honestly looks excellent:

The Daily Express: “Prince Harry fans convinced new video proves ‘he’s never coming back to the UK’.” The Daily Mail: “Moment Prince Harry launches into the waves to show off impressive surfing skills at California surf ranch four years after Meghan bought him lessons.” I actually forgot that Meghan bought him surfing lessons, or at least that’s what the tabloids reported back in 2020. Harry has been hanging out with several of these surfers for a while – Harry spent time with Kelly Slater and Raimana at the F1 race last year. Anyway, Harry looks free and happy. Surf’s up!

Surfing is balance, some strength and core stability which he has in spades. You can learn enough to be up in weeks.
For some people it comes super easy. My son stood the first time he tried surfing and was a natural (all sports were easy for him for some reason). I have never been able to stand on a surfboard. I can body surf, but that’s not very hard at all.
IIRC, he and his Salty Estranged Brother used to surf somewhere in Cornwall? With the Van Cutsem kids?
He definitely knew how to surf before he made Cali his home.
I was going to say – I think he has surfed before, but probably not with such easy access to it or the kinds of waves that California has. We also know he’s spent his life skiing and snowboarding and probably waterskiing so while those are different sports, there’s going to be a lot of the same requirements re: core strength and balance.

I’m a surf instructor and have a 99.9% success rate of getting people to stand on the first lesson. Do they look like Prince Harry? No. But like many other sports, you can do the basics pretty quickly. With good instruction 😉

The downhill scooting was v cute and funny. It could’ve been fear but also it always hurts my shins or my calves or something when I walk downhill. Less tiring than uphill but more painful. That’s why hiking isn’t my fave unless it’s chill inclines. I could walk forever on a flat or moderate terrain but significant uphill hiking. Sigh. Not my favorite.

It’s a fun video, I think that is what I love the most about their lives in America.. the videos and photos of them they are looking happy, healthy and joyful. Seeing things like Prince Harry surfing, or he and Meghan salsa dancing just makes me smile. That happy energy is sure a stark contrast when you see any event involving the left over royals on misery island.

As others have said, Harry is a natural athlete; time spent in Cornwall as a teen and taking advantage of the waves there has given him a good experience so he can enhance his proficiency here.
I get such joy whenever I see Harry and Meghan having fun and being so relaxed.

Disney plus had a documentary a few years ago – I think it was actually about sharks during shark week – it was a series but I only watched the first episode – it featured Chris Hemsworth and the premise I guess was his surfing in Australia and the sharks coming closer to the shore (related to climate change) and I can’t really remember the rest for the following reason:
there was literally a scene where Chris changed from his wetsuit to regular clothes (or vice versa, this was years ago, dont judge) and they used SLOW MOTION so you could not miss a moment of his abs.
that was when I knew it was not a serious documentary. Nothing against his abs, but come on, slow motion?!?!

This is in Central California, an agricultural area. It’s a manmade surf ranch (ironically in a drought plagued area) but reproduces the waves legitimately enough that lots of surfers and celebs frequently come to try it.
It’s not open to the public, per se.
Actually know a friend with a family member who works there; says they’re really cool out there. Gonna have to check it out if the opportunity to have been there occurred!
