Denzel Washington on Gladiator II: ‘I’m putting this dress on, these rings & I’m going crazy’

Gladiator II comes out a month from now, the weekend before Thanksgiving. My prediction: this will be one of the biggest movies of the year. It’s just a feeling I have, because of a combination of factors. It’s a “dad movie” with appeal to Gen Z; people f–king love Denzel Washington; and it looks like Ridley Scott managed to do the thing and create a very good sequel, 24 years later. Over the weekend, there was a special screening of the film and critics came away raving about it, and raving about Denzel specifically. There are even more people saying that this could make Denzel some kind of Oscar contender. Denzel and Paul Mescal spoke at the screening and these quotes are great:

At a special screening on the Paramount lot on Friday, Gladiator II stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen and Fred Hechinger offered a first look at their new film and opened up about their experiences working on Ridley Scott‘s sequel. The film sees Mescal playing a grown-up Lucius Verus II, a nephew of emperor Commodus from the original film played by Joaquin Phoenix. Lucius returns to Rome after being forced into slavery to battle not as a ruler but as a gladiator out for revenge and power, seeking to return the glory of Rome to its people.

“I suppose Lucius represented something to me that I had never done before, like somebody who is quite front-footed through the two-and-a-half hours,” Mescal said of taking on the lead role. “I hadn’t gotten to do that before, and it’s something that has been kind of latently within me, something that’s more full of something that people haven’t seen.”

Washington also has a prominent part in the film as Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer and former gladiator who plots to control Rome. The actor joked during the Q&A, “He’s misunderstood. He’s a nice fellow… He’s trying to use everybody. He’d use his mother, he’d use his own children; he’s already used up his soul, so he didn’t have any left. He’s in bed with the devil,” Washington continued, explaining that Scott made their work easy by building life-size sets as they shot in Malta. “When you would walk around, you were in Rome, and it seemed like 10,000 extras and horses. It was make-believe, it was play, it was fun; just put the gear on, put the dress on and go, that’s the way I look at it. I’m putting this dress on, these rings and I’m going crazy.”

Mescal also touched on both his physical and emotional transformation for his character, joking that he had “this naive idea at the start where I was like, ‘I’m maybe gonna just play a gladiator that kind of looks normal.’” He later realized, “I always saw him like a dog, like somebody who would just scrap his way to survival” who, for most of the film, “doesn’t really care if he lives or dies.”

The Normal People star told a story about how on the first day of shooting he was sitting in the production tent when Scott came in with a cigar. “I was absolutely sh–ting myself, and he looks at me, he goes, ‘You nervous?’ And I didn’t know what the appropriate answer was so I was like, ‘Eh.’ He’s like, ‘Your nerves are no f–king good to me.’ Marches out, cameras are turning over,” Mescal recalled to laughs from the crowd.

“I’m putting this dress on, these rings and I’m going crazy” – Denzel is amazing. It sounds like he had a blast working on this, especially since he didn’t have to do any of the gladiatorial training. Denzel just had to show up, wear some spectacular jewelry and drive the plot forward. What if Denzel wins a third Oscar, you guys?? I will be so happy.

Denzel looks like he’s having the time of his life in the trailer. He wants to devour ALL that scenery. This looks like fun.

This sounds fab and I love that he had a blast making it. One thing that stood out for me in the OG one (see below) was the fight/action sequences. IIRC they did it all live and didn’t have any green screen? That tracks with what he’s saying about the amazing sets that were built for this one.

My BFF and boyfriend love the first one while I saw it once years back and felt very ‘meh’ about it. But the local cinema had it as their throwback film last week and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, even if everything I predicted was wrong and SPOILER literally everyone dies.

This looks like a movie that will be better on the big screen.
Now if only the other folks can behave at the theater, that’d make me interested.

    DW is good in everything.
Watched Malcolm X again not long ago. Excellent.

Anything that’s got Denzel in it will have the whole family plus friends in the cinema on the first day it’s released over here, no questions asked.

Ridley Scott is an added bonus.

Saying we’re excited for it would be quite an understatement.

And the D should get another Oscar nomination.

🤣😂I am always amused when men in the west go on about wearing dresses when other men (Africans and Arab) wear robes all the time with a lot of jewellery and its nothing.
I suppose that’s what wardrobe does in filming. Changes perception about yourself.🤷🏾‍♀️

  6. KC says:

Damnation. Denzel Washington has always been a handsome man, but as a Grey Fox! Yikes.

  7. Nic919 says:

This might be Training Day: Ancient Rome, but it also looks damn good especially all the Denzel parts.
