Wallis Simpson was the victim of a high-level smear campaign created by a spy

Multiple things can be true about Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, all at once. She was the victim of a particularly vicious and long-running smear campaign. She was an American divorcee who was deemed unsuitable for the heir to the British throne. She had legitimate ties to Nazi officials, and she and Edward had cozy relationships with many high-ranking people in the Third Reich. Wallis probably never believed that she would cause Edward VIII’s abdication and that she and Edward would end up in exile for the rest of their lives. All of that is true, from what I’ve read over the years and from the historical record. Well, there’s a new book about Wallis called Her Lotus Year, about how a British spy planted stories about Wallis and her seductress adventures within British society:

Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee who married Edward VIII plunging the British monarchy into turmoil when he abdicated in 1936, was the victim of an extraordinary disinformation campaign. The plot was masterminded by a British spy, who characterized her as a libertine who learnt an exotic sex technique called “The Shanghai Grip” in a Chinese brothel.

A new book claims that a fabled briefing document full of salacious stories about Simpson known as the “China Dossier”—a copy of which has never been found but was allegedly passed around high society—was the work of an “incredibly powerful” intelligence officer based in Shanghai named Harry Steptoe.

Supporters of Meghan Markle, another American divorcee who married into the royal family without entirely happy consequences for the institution, are likely to see parallels with establishment efforts to discredit Wallis. Although Meghan was outwardly welcomed into the family, Meghan herself complained that she was the victim of a “smear campaign” when she was accused of bullying by palace operatives, and her and Prince Harry have both alleged that the media have long colluded with the palace to sully their reputations.

Simpson lived in China in 1924 with her first husband, Earl Winfield Spencer Jr, whom she split from while living there. She subsequently spent several months in the country as a single woman. A report in The Times of London says that the titillating tales in the dossier included claims that Wallis, when living in China, had been a p–n model and had visited brothels to learn a sex technique supposedly called “the Shanghai grip.”

The carefully planned sexist and racist slanders are described in the new book, Her Lotus Year, as “one of the most successful whispering campaigns of all time.” The secret of the dossier’s success, author Paul French says in his book, was that the stories of sexual excess were all existing rumors and scandals in Chinese society which were transposed onto Wallis by the intelligence operative. The goal was to stop Edward plunging the nation into turmoil by marrying a divorcee: “They just wanted to scupper this relationship somehow,” French told The Times.

[From The Daily Beast]

“A fabled briefing document full of salacious stories about Simpson known as the “China Dossier”—a copy of which has never been found but was allegedly passed around high society…” This is what they did in the 1930s before the British media became so powerful. They created a dossier and spread it around the aristocracy. The modern version of this is the monarchy authorizing the public smear campaign on Meghan, with courtiers and royals providing off-the-record accounts of how Meghan “bullied staffers” and “made Kate cry” and “sent 5 am emails.” As for Wallis… as I said, multiple things are true at once. Wallis was the victim of a really disgusting smear campaign… but she was also a problematic woman with ties to Nazis.

Also: “The goal was to stop Edward plunging the nation into turmoil by marrying a divorcee: ‘They just wanted to scupper this relationship somehow.’” That was also the goal of the smearing of Meghan, by the way. A century later, and it’s still the same fundamental play, to smear the American woman in the hope that they can somehow convince a prince not to marry someone they don’t like. In some ways, Harry’s marriage to Meghan was not as high-stakes as Edward marrying Wallis a year before England got pulled into WWII. In other ways, the Sussex marriage and Sussexit certainly feels more consequential in the modern era.

I mean, she was still a Nazi supporter, which wasn’t a lie since we have photos of her and Edward visiting them. I understand why they tried to stop Edward from marrying her since he was the King, so his marriage carried a lot of importance to the future of the country. With Meghan marrying the brother of the future King, nothing can explain the cruel campaign carried against her, but the jealousy and racial bias of Charles, Camilla, Will, and Kate.

    • Megan says:

Edward’s brother the Duke of Kent was also a Nazi sympathizer. And three of Prince Philip’s sisters who were living in Germany were Nazis. There are many ties to Hitler in the BRF.

      • sevenblue says:

@Megan, that is certainly true, however Edward was actively collaborating with Nazis. The same can’t be said about other family members.

      • Becks1 says:

and there are still are – is it Princess Michael of Kent whose father was a Nazi officer?

      • Lawrenceville says:

So then really since Edward himself was a nazi sympathizer, it beggars the question what exactly was the point of smearing Wallis? Whether she married Edward or not, Edward was still a nazi himself. So, this tells me that the smear campaign had absolutely nothing to do with “them” not wanting the heir to the British throne and then newly crowned king to marry a nazi sympathizer but had everything to do with “them” just not liking nor seeing Wallis as one of them or just good enough for their crown prince. Wallis could have been an angel sent from heaven and “them” would have still wanted to “scamper that relationship”. Them just hated Wallis, period. The xenophobia, misogynoir, misogyny and just hatefulness of “others” in Britain runs very, very deep.

      • sevenblue says:

@Lawrenceville, imo they used her as a reason to push him out of the crown. I think, it was known by the government that she had connections to the Nazi Germany. Her being American and a divorcee could be accepted, but the suspicions of her and Edward collaborating with Nazis couldn’t. I think, the latest research shows that this is why the government pressured Edward to abdicate. This part of the story was reduced to Wallis being a divorcee and American to hide the fact that the King (a family member of BRF) was a suspected traitor.

      • harpervalleypta says:

Let’s not forget that Wallis was still actively married to her second husband during EVIII’s entire reign. Yeah, she was technically a divorcee because she had divorced her second husband, but she was blatantly committing adultery with EVIII.

She filed for divorce from her 2nd husband due to his (supposed) adultery), but divorced her1st husband due to irreconcilable differences, NOT adultury, which was the only acceptable reason for divorce in the CoE.

If a man had been philandering like that, it would have been overlooked, but here’s a woman — an AMERICAN woman — an IMMORAL American woman — possibly becoming queen. That was unacceptable.

  2. Tessa says:

No comparison, really. The future King Charles already had been allowed to marry a divorcee, and he a divorced person. Anne and Andrew were able to divorce from their respective spouses. Anne got to remarry. Harry was not going to be King, was not a King who had to abdicate. And Harry and Meghan were free to date. Both single.

    • Eurydice says:

And Elizabeth approved the marriage under the Succession Act.

    • Asgh says:

No Charles got to marry a divorcee after he produced 2 legitimate heirs. He still couldnt marry camilla for the longest time and essentially got to marry her when she was past child bearing age and some of the dust settled from the way he treated an innocent diana/her death.

No way charles could have married her if diana was still alive.

      • Joy says:

“No way charles could have married her if diana was still alive.”

This is why a lot of people look askance at KC3 and the death of Princess Diana. He had a motive, I’m just saying.

      • Tessa says:

If Charles had pushed to marry her when she was child bearing age at that time he may have had to give up his place in line of succession. And any children could not be in line of succession if the rules were not changed.. If Wallis had a baby with Edward after the abdication the child would not be in line of succession. This was stipulated in the abdication terms.

      • Tessa says:

Charles has to wait until the queen mother died to marry Camilla. She did not want a c and c wedding in her lifetime. The Burrell trial caused a delay because the contents of some of Diana’s letters were released yo the media by Burrell. Even the one where Diana wrote about Charles arranging an accident. The queen shut down the trial

  3. Get Real says:

She was a nazi. Who cares.
And she was hardly the first nor the most sympatheitc victim of British propaganda.

    • Lau says:

It’s really weird to try to victimize her when her wikipedia page literally has the photos of them visiting and being friendly with hitler. Also it feels like we are trying to encourage the comparison with Meghan which is f*cking toxic.

    • WTF says:

I was coming here to say just that. She was a Nazi sympathizer. She was not a “problematic” woman. She was racist and antisemitic. The fact that the book is talking about how horrible it is that the BRF used racist stereotypes about Asian women to hurt her is diabolical to me.

    • Oh come on. says:

Yeah, exactly. Wallis and Edward visited concentration camps *as tourists*, and palled around with Hitler.

Comparing Wallis and Edward to Meghan and Harry is uncalled-for. “Divorced American” is the only thing Meghan has in common with Wallis, and those factors have nothing to do with why the BRF and BM threw her to the wolves (Charles married a divorcee; Harry dated a white Zimbabwean woman for YEARS without any egregious smears by the BRF or BM). The racist, misogynistic smear campaign against Meghan happened only because she was Black. Does anyone think the BRF and BM would have reacted any differently if Meghan had been a never-married Black Brit?

I don’t enjoy seeing this Black woman grouped with Wallis Simpson.

  4. Lucy says:

The Chinese dossier worked because most of those ppl were fans of hitlers early work. She and David weren’t the only sympathizers in the upper class, and I don’t think the nazi ties were the motivator for smearing her until after ww2.

But yes, the uk royalty has been running the same playbook over and over. Meghan’s the only one who’s escaped and that’s why they keep trying. An institution can carry out grudges infinitely.

    • Nic919 says:

Wallis’s sister in law was known all her life as a brazen racist and she thought it was cute to have her girls do a Nazi salute, which was photographed. The aristo British were all massive racists back then. Just like they are now.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

The Nazi sympathizer charge was later used to justify the smear campaign. They didn’t care if she was a Nazi at first. For that matter, Edward was more sympathetic to the Nazi cause than she was. The British aristocracy found Wallis Simpson objectionable because she was an American, a divorcee, and considered lower class. At the time, many members of the British upper crust were Nazi adjacent. Look up the Mitford sisters.

  5. Mab's A'Mabbin says:

Nazi? In same article as Meghan? Nope.

  6. Nic919 says:

The real problem was Edward not Wallis. He was a direct heir with his father and grandfather ahead of him at birth and did nothing but party for most of his life. He was easily manipulated too which is why the government didn’t want him as king. Wallis was a convenient scapegoat.

William is very much like him in character.

The only comparison to meghan is how the British establishment can pull together to target one woman. But Meghan was never a threat to the monarchy or partying with fascists. That would be William and his Russian friends.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Very true – there were also rumours that Edward was feeding the Nazi’s Britain’s war secrets which Churchill covered up by destroying evidence. He def covered something up to do with the RF during that period.

And yeah, Peggy is just like him – an easily manipulated fool.

      • BQM says:

George V was so concerned about his son’s actions and his circle that he actually had him placed under surveillance for a period.

    • bisynaptic says:

Yes—and Harry’s choice of Meghan complicates British establishment efforts to do to William what they did to Edward VIII: force him to abdicate, in favor of his younger brother (the “spare”). This would explain some of the heat behind the animosity to Meghan: she’s really f—ing up their plans.

  7. Natalia says:

    She was a nazi, period

  8. Eurydice says:

However false it was, at least Simpson was accused of something concrete and outside of social conventions – being a porn star and hanging out in brothels wouldn’t be all that accepted even today. But, Meghan’s never been accused of doing anything out of the ordinary – the smears have been against her as a person, not because she’s done any unacceptable things.

  9. ML says:

I appreciate the nuance, but also end up at “she was a nazi.” In fact, MANY rich, upperclass people were nazi sympathizers—which kind of has echoes in today’s world with Trump and people like Musk and Bezos. Leopard eating faces belongs here.

  10. Jais says:

Sigh. Just saying that Meghan “complained” about a smear campaign makes me annoyed. As if Meghan is just some delusional complainer as opposed to a victim. Let me fix this. Many people all over the world witnessed the smear campaign against meghan. There. Much better.

    • BeanieBean says:

I was rather thrown when I came to that first Meghan reference. This is a book about Wallis Simpson! Stick with her!

  11. Deedee says:

Wallis and Edward were both Nazi sympathizers and I’ve read that was the real reason Edwatd had to abdicate. The “giving up the throne for the love of his life” was the spin.

  12. Amy Bee says:

Most of the British aristocracy were Nazi sympathizers at the time Wallis came on the scene.

  13. Traveller says:

I accept no excuses for nazi sympathizers – none. I don’t care how prevalent it was in their social circle (if they had eyes they could see what was happening and chose to ignore it).
I have no sympathy whatsoever for Wallis and Edward.

  14. yipyip says:

    E&W were both Nazi supporters.
Edward was willing to back Hilter in order for him to retake the throne, is what I’ve heard.
Imagine that! The entire country was being bombed to dust, children had to be sent away for safety, the lives lost, etc.

Churchill, The Bulldog, was truly an amazing person.
IMO, Churchill was the saviour of England during WW2.

H&M are out of it all. Best thing all around.

  15. Smegmoria says:

So they’re saying she learned how to do kegels?

  16. Whatnow says:

From what I understand it came out after Wallis and Edwards deaths that she did not want to marry him and actually was not happy with him. They were not each other’s soulmates. I’ve read it in several books and saw a documentary. I believe they found some of her diaries where she put these sentiments into words

    • kelleybelle says:

Yes. She called him a fool for abdicating and derided him for the remainder of their lives. She remained in loved with her second husband. Edward threatned to kill himself if she left. In a way she did us all a huge favour; Edward was very unfit to be king.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

He was obsessed with her and yeah she didn’t want to marry him as she wanted to carry on as his mistress. Her life with him was like being his mother / nanny who was always finding ways to occupy him hence why she was always throwing parties. He used to follow her about the house from room to room.

Their relationship could best be described as 2 v toxic and manipulative people who were not good for each other. Neither of them were particularly nice people.

PS. I have always loved the dress she worse at their wedding- does anyone have any deets on it? Wasn’t it Chanel or something?

      • BQM says:

@digital unicorn It was by Mainbocher in “Wallis blue” to match her eyes. It’s held by the metropolitan museum in nyc. She donated it in 1950.

The iconic Schiaparelli/Dali lobster dress was part of her trousseau.

      • Jan90067 says:

DU, from what you described about WS and Edward, you’ve just described the exact relationship btwn the Rottweiler and Chas.

  17. VilleRose says:

I’ve read up a lot on Wallis and she was no doubt the victim of a smear campaign to dissuade Edward from marrying her. She was not a sympathetic victim however, she and Edward openly admired Nazis and from all the sources I’ve read, her personality was irritating and she rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I don’t think I would have liked her had I had the chance to meet her if we had been alive at the same time. I hate the inevitable comparisons between her and Meghan because while they had similar life experiences (both divorcees, both American, both fell in love with members of the BRF), they are very different people and had very different lives despite those similarities.

    • Tessa says:

Harry was never king who abdicated. Wallis also did not exactly refuse Edward. Thelma Furness was Edward’s mistress. She went on to travel overseas and asked her to watch over david for her. When Thelma returned she saw Wallis had taken over and David was besotted with her. Thelma soon packed up and left

  18. Athena says:

After Jeremy Clarkson said the vile things about Meghan, a member of the British aristocracy, who is married to an American, possibly a divorcee, can’t tell since her past has been scrubbed clean, gave Clarkson a shout out in his YouTube channel. I don’t know where the line is with these aristos and would not be surprise if they were just fine with Hitler.

  19. Jaded says:

I don’t think Wallis was a victim of anything other than her own lust for power and fortune. She left her husband, Ernest Simpson, and moved to an apartment in Bryanston Court in London. Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe, a Nazi spy being monitored by British intelligence, was also living there. The two women soon became close friends, which turned out to be trouble for Wallis because French Intelligence and MI6 were intercepting Princess Stephanie’s correspondence and tracking her movements in and out of the country since early in 1928. They also had evidence that Wallis was having a relationship with Joachim von Ribbentrop, the German Ambassador to Britain.

In the meantime, many in Europe, including Edward, applauded Germany’s post-war economic recovery. Don’t forget that the British RF are German, and only changed their name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor after WWI due to anti-German sentiments. Edward also supported the increase in far-right political parties, especially the British Union of Fascists in 1932 led by former MP Sir Oswald Mosely. The BUF and others reasoned that their right-wing groups would be a bulwark against a growing Communist threat.

A strong streak of anti-Semitism ran through these groups, as well as the British government and royal family. Many were more than willing to overlook the sharp rise of anti-Jewish attacks and legislation in Germany, with Edward saying in 1933 that it was “no business of ours to interfere in Germany’s internal affairs either re: Jews or re: anything else.” He also stated that “Dictators are very popular these days. We might want one in England before long.”

So Edward was a Nazi sympathizer and antisemite before he even met Wallis, he certainly wasn’t persuaded by her. I’m sure it was one of the things that cemented their relationship and eventually doomed his relevance in the BRF.

  20. Patsy Cline says:

Is there not enough royal family coverage that there needs to be a post dedicated to Wallis Simpson and whatever happened 80 years ago?

    • BQM says:

As a historian I find posts like these more interesting than most of the current royal posts personally. 🤷‍♀️ It’s in conjunction with a new book and not just for funsies.

      • Maja says:

“Hitler’s Girl: The British Aristocracy and the Third Reich on the Eve of WWII”
This is a very interesting book by Lauren Young. In my opinion, it is very one-sided to reduce the problem of fascism to just two people. The upper class was much more at risk than people want to believe.

      • BeanieBean says:

Another look into this time period & upper crust sympathies is ‘The Mitford Girls’ by Mary S. Lovell; one of the Milfords was married to Mosely, whom @Jaded referenced.

    • Jaded says:

Well when you think that Edward VIII, with the help of Wallis Simpson, nearly handed over England to Hitler, the world today would be a very different place. Historians are like the librarians of world events. They weave together events and issues from the past into theories and actions that can be used today, and the history of Hitler’s wiping out millions of people based on their religion and ethnicity should NEVER be forgotten or dismissed as “whatever happened 80 years ago”.

  21. FancyPants says:

Come on y’all, “a copy of which has never been found?” It must be in Ukraine with all of Hillary’s servers… Don’t pick and choose the conspiracies you like. 🙄

  22. Tessa says:

Wallis first husband Winfield Spencer was physically abusive to her which is why she wanted out of the marriage.
Allegedly his physical violence caused her to miscarry and she could not have children after that.
