Prince Harry’s Travalyst is possibly one of his most successful projects, right?

In September, Prince Harry traveled solo to New York for several days. It was a work trip, and his appearance and speech at the Clinton Global Initiative got the most headlines. But he also did so many other appearances. As I wrote back then, “Imagine being 40 years old and having all of this work to show for it – founder of Travalyst, founder of Sentebale, co-founder of Archewell, founder of The Parents Network, founder of the Invictus Games, patron of WellChild, patron of The HALO Trust, patron of The Diana Award.” Not to mention, he’s a veteran, a bestselling author, COO of BetterUp and he’s on the board of African Parks. He’s got like a few dozen other titles too.

As I said back in 2023, the British media rarely discusses Travalyst, which Harry started in 2019. It was basically the last project he launched as a “working royal,” and he already had one foot out the door. He took Travalyst with him, and it’s grown so fast. Travalyst has big corporate partners and a staff of dozens, plus a board of directors and everything else. Harry is still involved with Travalyst and when he was in NYC, he went to the five-year anniversary event. He was also named on Time’s 100 Climate list, specifically for founding Travalyst. Now Travalyst has made a video highlighting their 2024:

It’s sort of crazy that Travalyst was always some little side-project for Harry, and it’s turned out to be one of his most successful ideas. I hate to bring up the Other Brother, but if William had just one idea which panned out as successfully as Travalyst, we would never hear the end of it. They would be embiggening William for decades as “remember when he came up with Travalyst?!?” But because Harry did this, it’s virtually ignored by the British media.

I think Harry leaving the Royal Family has helped the growth of Travalyst.

  2. Afken says:

I agree. It’s actually amazing how direct and tangible its impact is. Its collaboration with Google is responsible for the emission info when you search up flights. It’s a coalition with a value well over a trillion. It’s quiet and mighty and yet still recognised for its achievements. And yes not to compare to William, but compared to Earthshot, while travalyst may not be glam and hasn’t to me recollection engaged with celebrity at all, its impact is clear to see and not dependent on the fluffing of sycophantic royal reporters.

Travalyst coalition has changed the way I book travel. There’s no way that it could have the impact that it does without Harry’s ongoing commitment. It’s fantastic the way he put it together, by convening influential people and asking if and how something like this could work. Now there are industry heavyweights freely working together to come up with common framework and terminology.

  3. Jais says:

Sorry if this is a crass question but I don’t know how this stuff works. Travalyst is a nonprofit but as the founder does he collect some form of yearly money from it? Either way, it seems to be doing really well and it’s def impressive.

      https://travalyst.org/about/
Find out everything you need to know here. Before every trip I take myself, I check whether hotels and means of transport are certified sustainable by Travalyst and usually opt for these travel options. This costs travellers nothing.

      • Becks1 says:

She’s not asking how Travalyst works in itself, she’s asking if Harry gets paid from it.

@Jais I dont know. I would think when he was a working royal he wouldn’t have been paid but I wouldn’t be surprised if now he gets some sort of annual “salary” or something. But I dont know how this works either lol.

    • Eurydice says:

Travalyst falls under the “small companies” category, so it doesn’t have to detail income and expenses – but, given how the financials look, I don’t think it’s likely that Harry or the board members get paid. If they do, it would be a small amount and not really worth it.

      • kirk says:

I found it interesting that the nonprofit “small companies” category isn’t required to disclose income statement or components to public to maintain its tax advantaged status. Looks like Harry has been funding this out of his back pocket, with nominal salaries for CEO and Directors. I found a listing for a COO position on a nonprofit jobs board, but I question the job board validity given actual filings.

Company filings are here (including the one where Harry changed his residence to USA causing the tabloids to howl): https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/12546940/filing-history

Here’s a nonprofit explainer for England and Wales. Travalyst is a private company of the “limited by guarantee” type, with Harry holding “75% or more” of the shares, voting rights and control over the board of directors: https://cof.org/country-notes/nonprofit-law-england-wales

      • kirk says:

CEO Sally Davey probably earns a professional salary, given her involvement. This article from 2022 also mentions a probable salaried “chief marketing officer Tessa Longfield,” but Longfield has since moved to travel technology company Sabre Corporation – https://www.travelweekly.com/Arnie-Weissmann/The-catalyst-for-Travalyst-Prince-Harry-Duke-of-Sussex

It’s quite possible that Travalyst gets buy-in from corporate partners while relying on those businesses (Google, etc.) to pay their own employees working on sustainability to contribute to Travalyst goal to achieve a uniform framework. Travalyst youtube video about displaying flight emissions has speakers (employees) of different organizations contributing to discussion – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eRxBKL-Q1E

    • somebody says:

If it costs travellers nothing, it isn’t likely he is being paid.

      • Kingston says:

There are many business models, especially social enterprises, in which the intended users of the product/service (consumers) are not required to pay. However, the ones who pay are the commercial entities that buy-in/subscribe to the program/business.

Directors may receive compensation for their services but not necessarily at the level of a salary. Or their compensation might be non-cash. Same for the Founder (Harry).

However, if at some point, Harry tenders his 75+% share ownership in a buy-out offer……….WHEW!

    • MinnieMouse says:

I don’t know the ins and outs of Travalyst specifically, but people who work at non-profits do get paid. Not like they would in the private sector (and there’s a whole bundle of literature out there discussing the pros and cons of that model), but any functioning non-profit has an administrative budget.

    • bananapanda says:

Non profits in the US enjoy tax free status for businesses. Their status is granted by the IRS and their financial statements are publicly available online or by request.

The Boards for small to mid size non profits are usually unpaid and volunteer their time and expertise, which are sometimes listed as assets / income in the annual report. Harry probably doesn’t take a salary from this and leave it for the staff or Executive Director.

    • Afken says:

It’s a not for profit so it’s not a charity (nonprofit) it’s an organisation where the business work done isn’t for the profit of the founder/owners/members. So any profit made goes back into the company and to delivering its initiatives. It also means the coalition members really are members because they are essentially paying to work together and unlike a nonprofit any donations they make to it are not tax deductible so it’s a real investment of power and funds to make sustainable travel happen.

  4. Charlie says:

What’s that saying? The best revenge is to live well. Prince Harry is definitely living his best life right now.

  5. Chloe says:

The reason why Travelyst is hardly talkrd about by the BM is because the other brother is the one that wants to be known as the eco warrior.

Has there been an impact report on eartshit yet?

    • Nanea says:

The release of Keenshot Earthflop’s Impact Report was the reason the video with Hannah Waddingham and Harry’s brother got made.

And I think, in addition to the reason that you gave for the BM to ignore Travalyst and its huge and positive impact, the gutter press don’t report on it because they don’t really *get* it.

    • Hypocrisy says:

      Exactly that…

  6. Ginger says:

Harry was never allowed to shine. It’s clear how intelligent he is. The British press would constantly talk about how dumb Harry is when it’s clear that it is William.

  7. somebody says:

Is there anything of PH’s that has bombed? I can’t come up with anything. Maybe some of the stuff that W&K stole credit for and tried to continue after he left.

    • sevenblue says:

They certainly stole Heads Together from Harry. It is mental health project and Will gave the credit for the name to Kate, which I am sure is a lie. After Harry left, they did one or two events for it, now it is completely forgotten. When they talked about it, they only focused on doing sports to improve mental health, because therapy isn’t a palace-approved subject.

  8. Beverley says:

The Other Brother must grind his teeth to dust in the shadow of his more capable, intelligent, and popular younger brother Harry. No matter how he tries, he just can’t appear to be as successful as Harry. It must grate Slumlord Willy’s nerves on the daily.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

Yuuuup – Earthplop will never feature on TIME’s 100 Climate list

    • Becks1 says:

I think something that both H&M do really well – and where W&K fail – is that they come up with very concrete ideas to address a specific need. Here, Prince Harry knows that people are going to travel (as he likes to travel) so hes trying to help people make informed decisions about their traveling choices. He’s partnering with travel sites like expedia and google travel to help make this happen.

It doesn’t mean their ideas are small – Travalyst isn’t small; Invictus isn’t small. But they are concrete and have a clear goal/purpose.

Contrast that with “We need to save the environment in 10 years” and “early years are important” and “we can end homelessness” and its easy to see why one brother succeeds and the other skates by on his title.

    • Magdalena says:

Absolutely. I also think that it must especially grate William because he and Jason Knauf and Simon Case tried SO hard to torpedo Travalyst when it was in its infancy. Remember how they incited all those hate articles about H travelling on private jets and “being hypocritical while claiming to care about the environment”? And they kept tying all of these vitriolic reports to Travalyst. The cretins planted a reporter in the audience to ask him a question based on their lies DURING THE LAUNCH of Travalyst, if I recall correctly. And he correctly explained that yes, he does occasionally use private jets when it is a matter of safety for himself and his family. It’s almost as though they wanted him to hand this over to William as well. And if H continued to refuse then they would sabotage it. So yes, it must grate like hell. And long may it do so. Yet again, William failed.

      • Magdalena says:

Forgot to add that the fake budget flight stunt that William and Kate pulled was staged at around the same time that Travalyst was being launched. They really thought that Harry would give up or cave in and drop his work to establish it. They really didn’t know him – they definitely underestimated him.

      • Jais says:

Huh. Interesting. I def remember the flybe stunt as trying to one up the Sussexes while the wales looked frugal. LOL. But I hadn’t connected the smear of the private jet use being about bombing travalyst from its inception. Interesting.

      • Becks1 says:

@Jais yes! at the time we didn’t realize that, we just thought they were harassing Harry because they could. Then Travalyst was announced in the midst of all the furor and it all made sense. They were trying to end Travalyst before it started.

  9. Cassie says:

Well done Harry , your father must be very proud of you .

If he wasn’t such a jealous piece of uncaring rubbish .

I don’t even know you , but I am proud of you .

  10. Over it says:

I pity the poor fools that have to prop up wee willy wrinkle and his Small r brand . He’s just bad at everything . Every single thing. Couldn’t happen to a better looser .
