Remember the spate of food heists that went down in England last year, that were very wrong and illegal… but also undeniably quirky? Like the 22 tons of artisanal cheddar that were stolen, prompting Jamie Oliver to ask citizens to lookout for “lorryloads of very posh cheese.” Or the grinchy thieves who absconded with a delivery truck, that just so happened to have 2,500 savory Christmas pies. America now has a theft of its own to report, only unlike the eccentric British examples, there is no charm whatsoever in this story. And here it is: 100,000 eggs were lifted off a distribution trailer at a Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Pennsylvania. And with the inflated price of eggs in this economy, the value is estimated at $40,000 (or $4.80 per dozen). What we know so far on this breaking news:
Approximately 100,000 eggs valued at around $40,000 were stolen from a truck in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania State Police said in an incident report that the theft was reported on Feb. 1, at 8:40 p.m.
The theft occurred at Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle, Pa. The eggs were stolen from the back of a distribution trailer. Police did not release any further information, just that the investigation is ongoing.
“Pete & Gerry’s is aware of a recent incident in Franklin County, Pa., and we are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate,” the company said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We take this matter seriously and are committed to resolving it as quickly as possible. Due to the ongoing investigation we cannot comment any further on this matter.”
The theft comes as egg production in the United States has slowed, in part because of an avian flu that has disrupted supply, the USDA said in a Jan. 31 market overview. The agency says wholesale prices of eggs have risen “sharply.”
So Trump was carried back into office on a carton of overpriced eggs — that’s what millions of Americans deemed the most important issue (or at least that was their cover story) — and here we are. This is the reality of Trump’s America: people committing grand theft of eggs. Or people taking the legal route, and stockpiling Costco shopping carts with dozens upon dozens of eggs. But at least we have Orange Humpty Dumpty to fix the economy… Egg prices were already on track to rise even more this year, what with the bird flu epidemic and workers being deported. Now we can likely add on costs for security, if it ends up being that eggs can only travel safely under the protection of armed guards. Oh, and how’s that bird flu situation going? Well news broke this week of dairy cattle in Nevada testing positive for a new strain, and “experts say it marks a turning point in the nation’s efforts to contain the virus.” And raw-milk enthusiast RFK, Jr. is inching ever-closer to being confirmed as head of Health & Human Services. Great.
Me at the store watching people complain about $8 eggs and $30 chicken

‼️The soaring price of eggs has forced Waffle House to add a temporary surcharge on customers’ orders.
The Georgia-based chain is adding a 50-cent charge per egg because of the “nationwide rise in cost of eggs,” according to signs posted at its restaurants. 🥚

I guess it’s time for egg producers/suppliers/traders to watch the usual online market places…
I mean, you can’t just make an omelet out of a hundred thousand eggs to make the incriminating evidence disappear.
Just imagine the chaos that may erupt once Easter is approaching.
No Easter Egg hunt at the WH this year, or people might throw tomatoes at Felon47, his maladministration, and his crime syndicate family…
Looks like an egg-cellent egg-scape by everyone involved.
Too soon?
So…just where do you sell 100,000 stolen eggs? Without getting caught?
I can only assume stolen to order with plans for on-selling. With the UK thefts (I think one about salmon made the news too) the thinking was that it’s gangs who have the distribution networks set up and some of it may have ended up in Russia.
I doubt the Russians are coming for the US eggs but there are probably plenty of stores that will take ‘discounted’ eggs and sell them full price for a better profit. Or maybe it’s for commercial clients?
Yeah, but you need a refrigerated place to store them or sell them fast. They must have had a buyer first. It’s just odd, because it’s such a large amount and food that can go bad seems complicated. Double the stupidity.
You would be surprised at how many places like Waffle House would buy them under the table. You can sell them on the roadside, as well as sell them to small mom and pop stores.
You just know that they were Magas. Cletus isn’t very smart and can’t think too far ahead. They live for the moment and instant gratification. Hold my beer.
They’re not selling 100K eggs. They’re selling them like most people buy them: in 12, 18 or 36 count cartons. With the right connections they can unload 2,000 at a time and be done in a matter of hours.
Considering this post is news about eggs, this quote, “What we know so far on this breaking news…,” sounds really disturbing! It’s going to stink.
For those of you trying to replace eggs in baking, the vegan solution is a flax/ chia “egg,” which depending on what you’re making can work pretty well.
“That’s what millions of Americans deemed the most important issue (or at least that was their cover story) — ”
You’re damn right that was their cover story. It was never really about the price of eggs. And in 2016, it was never really about her emails. It was about sexism and racism the whole time.
I’ve realized that shaming Trump voters isn’t going to do anything. They know exactly who they voted for and why they voted for him.
How fast can anyone “fence” 40,000 (perishable) eggs? Breakage during transport is probably an issue too.
Ok what about all the food thrown away by grocery stores? Only a crime when corporations get “harmed”.
You just know that they were Magas. Cletus isn’t very smart and can’t think too far ahead. They live for the moment and instant gratification. Hold my beer.
And if they aren’t handled properly many people could become sick from eating them.
“Loose eggs. Loose eggs.”
Should’ve brought down the cost of eggs like they’re promised. lmao.
