Prince William & Kate plan to skip next Sunday’s BAFTAs, with no reason given

Last week, I predicted that Prince William and Kate would be working their fingers to the nub during the Invictus Games. I even said that it felt likely that William would bring out one or more of the Wales kids to a Six Nations rugby game over the weekend. That didn’t happen, and Kate and William went dark just as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped out in Canada on Friday. So… I was wrong. But why are they making a point of not “competing” with the Sussexes during the Invictus Games, huh? Are they worried that they’ll look too obvious and desperate for attention, which is what happened during the Dusseldorf games? Or is something else happening behind the scenes? Well, here’s some interesting news. For weeks, the British media has been hyping the idea that William and Kate would turn up to this Sunday’s BAFTAs. William is BAFTA president, after all. And he wouldn’t skip it for no reason, right? Well… he’s skipping it. So is Kate, obviously.

Kate Middleton and Prince William won’t be attending the 2025 BAFTAs.

Kensington Palace confirmed on Feb. 10 that the Prince and Princess of Wales will not be at the EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 16. Prince William, who has been president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010, is set to appear in a video package as part of the awards and will visit the London Screen Academy on Wednesday.

Due to his role, Prince William is a regular on the red carpet at the annual ceremony, often accompanied by his wife. William, 42, and Kate, 43, most recently attended the event together in 2023.

The Prince of Wales attended the event solo in 2024, shortly after it was announced that his wife had recently undergone abdominal surgery (the following month, Kate revealed that she was undergoing treatment for cancer).

[From People]

Something is definitely happening. Something other than their shameful laziness. Part of me wonders if this is all about William and whether he’s still mad about what happened at last year’s BAFTAs. He made an ass out of himself in like ten different ways, including telling an actress that she probably “had a lot of fun” acting in a movie where she played a rape survivor. And then there were those photos of William trying to talk to Ayo Edebiri, Phoebe Dynevor, Sophie Wilde and Mia McKenna Bruce. Those awkward pics were widely mocked, even by royalists. But it does feel like… I don’t know, something is wrong. Something is up.

  1. AlexandraS says:

Actually, an addendum on the announcement was jut released and said that he will instead host something for artists TOMORROW, Wednesday, over appearing on Sunday. Feeling the heat from Harry/Meghan no doubt. Whatever wrath and bad press Harry/Meghan receive during a year, INVICTUS *ALWAYS* results in a glorious resent. The press they have been getting over the past few days is wonderful and positive. Meanwhile the Brit Media has run out of narratives to peddle against Harry/Meghan.
The monarchy wont win this war.

    • Noor says:

William and Kate cannot afford to frivolously grace the red carpet and mingle with celebrity actors while Harry and Meghan are doing work supporting injured vets competing at the Invictus Games.

    • Deborah1 says:

@AlexandraS – The only British media outlet that seems to be reporting on the Invictus Games is the Daily Fail and sadly their coverage is totally negative. Frankly it’s sick. They are claiming the Sussexes are making it all about themselves when it is the British MEDIA which is making it all about them.

  2. Inge says:

Meanwhile Harry moved to a different country but still supports his patronages such as WellChild. I bet some charities wonder why they had to be stuck with people who hardly turn up(the ‘you havent been in 7 years’ comment to Kate!) and/or them complaining such as William complaining that he has to watch so many movies.

  3. ThatGirlThere says:

They’re a disaster. Seeing how each do at events on their own and together, they are just so…sad.

A complete juxtaposition to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Seeing the pictures and videos coming out of Vancouver has been a daily treat of pure joy. Seeing Meghan and Harry with the participants and their families and with the audience has been a soothing balm.

Let’s be real, even seeing Edward and Sofia holding hands was nice. The Lazy Prince and his Princess are cooked.

    • Barb Mill says:

I’ve seen a lot of photos of Sophie and Edwards Nepal trip on both twitter and Insta and it looks like they are doing a good job with this trip.

  4. Amy Bee says:

According to the royal rota William is not attending because it’s going to be half-term. I also think he’s not going because he didn’t like that he was ridiculed because of his interactions with actors at last year’s show.

    • Afken says:

Yep it’s cos it’s half term. They’re on holiday. So so hardworking they are. Also I suspect it’s because of the contrast. Richard Eden was like ohhhh Kate’s all about service while Meghan’s an influencer only for Meghan to postpone her show and get to work supporting LA and now invictus.

      • Alicky says:

So the kids are on holiday — so what? The event is at night. Are the doting parents planning to spend the evening watching their kids sleep?

      • Cathy says:

William can’t go, there’s no one to take care of the children… are they even in the UK?

      • Elizabeth Kerri Mahon says:

Last year, Kate was in the hospital, but William managed to attend the event. This year, it’s half-term, but he can’t show up even though the event is in the evening. He has no problem flying to foreign countries to watch sporting events while his kids are in school.

      • Ginger says:

They act like they don’t have a live in nanny to watch the kids. Hell, even Carol could watch them. It’s odd.

      • Jensa says:

I reckon they’ll be in Mustique or similar. Not that they’ll admit that.

    • Smart&Messy says:

My prediction was that they won’t turn up because they don’t want direct competition. It has always backfired. If it’s on the same they as a big IG event, like the closing ceremony then it’s even more likely that their awkward appearance would look like shyt compared to H and M and the veterans. Plus, IG attracts international attention and comparison. The BM can twist things until they are blue in the face but the international press are not obliged to adhere to their propaganda.
However, I thought they would do some charity events like hospital visits which are less likely to be criticized, even when they are awkward af.

    • Well they both won’t be going because he doesn’t want to go with Can’t and I also believe he didn’t like the ridicule he got last year which was deserved.

    • Becks1 says:

I would say its bc the kids are on break but they aren’t they typically on break during the BAFTAs? they’re usually around the same time every year.

I imagine its probably a combination of factors – kids on break, not wanting the direct comparison with Harry, and wanting to avoid ridicule. Maybe he tried harder to get that damn behavior codicil or whatever signed and was laughed out of the room.

I do think its weird they didn’t attend a rugby match over the weekend.

I also think its a weird line bc like I said I dont think he wants the direct comparison to Harry but he wants SOME comparison if he thinks he can win in the media. I wonder if someone pointed out to him that attending a red carpet awards show while Harry has spent the week with veterans would not be a good look?

      • Nic919 says:

I don’t think William wants to have Kate attend with him and there is no real reason for him to go so this year.

    • Cerys says:

I was just about to comment on that. It’s most likely that the BAFTAs will coincide with the Wales’ children never-ending school holidays.

    • Princessk says:

Also why are Charles and Camilla going to Italy?
Kate and Willy had to cancel last year but why can’t they go this year? Anyone the Italians will at least get someone who is genuinely interested in Italian history and culture.

    • MY3CENTS says:

Where do The School Runs go, when there is no school?
      Just wondering.

  5. acha says:

Do you guys think it’s part of that “Don’t talk about my clothes” initiative from Kate? “If I go to the BAFTAs, surely someone will think it’s just about me and my big dress! We can’t have that!”

I still don’t understand what else she feels she can offer.

    • Afken says:

She better not turn up ever again then. It’s not like it’s her patronage

    • Barb Mill says:

I had a feeling it may be related to that don’t pay attention to my clothes bit also but she hasn’t done a red carpet in a long time. Is this the same thing with the recent state dinners lately. Is she being benched from these kind of events.

      • Ann says:

“Don’t pay attention to my clothes” is another step in Kate being put out to pasture. I don’t think this is from her. I think Kate would love to have an enormous wardrobe budget and its associated media coverage, but William wants her gone.

    • Me at home says:

If that were the issue then she could “recycle” something and the DM would generate 10 gushing pieces about how thrifty she is.

    • Me at home says:

If that were the issue then she could “recycle” something and the DM would generate 10 gushing pieces about how thrifty she is.

  6. Maxine Branch says:

I do not think either of them will be missed.

    • LightPurple says:

BAFTA members are accustomed to covering for him at this point.

      • Lady Digby says:

@LigthtPurple they don’t attend every year and their kids half term starts on Friday. I was surprised he showed up last year because he was on leave whilst his wife was recovering from an operation. It was an omnishambles when he showed up completely unprepared and those snaps of young actresses looking beyond appalled at him went viral. I just loved Michael Sheen giving him the stink eye when he ambled in the auditorium. He loves watching male sport matches but hates the BAFTAS. Actors and actresses are usually charismatic, talented and hard working so he obviously has nothing in common with them and feels ill at ease.

    • Jais says:

Yeah, I’m not sure the BAFTAS care. Maybe I’m wrong. But it’s not a patronage where his presence makes a difference. That said, the tabloids no doubt wanted his presence and especially Kate’s.

      • Lady Digby says:

@Jais agreed BAFTAS isn’t a favourite event of his and the organisers are used to him letting them down. But the tabs were harping on about this event and clearly wanted them both to attend. I also agree with other Cbers that this constipated couple don’t want to risk comparison between them and their in-laws harmonious joint appearances at IG.

  7. Tessa says:

I don’t think peg wanted to go with her to bafta. Maybe he backed out because of that.

    • Smart&Messy says:

I can see that too. He probably didn’t want to go with her. The fact that he is super awkward at glitzy (and any other) events doesn’t stop him. He had his bachelor prince photos and articles about the ladies batting eyelashes and how he was the tallest in the room so he was happy.

  8. Dee(2) says:

So they can’t work much during the week because they have to pick up and drop off their kids from school, and then I guess sit in the parking lot for 8 hours and wait for them. They can’t work at night because they need to tuck their kids in, even though I remember being nine and 11 and that wouldn’t have been missed for one night. Why can’t they take the kids into London with them if it’s half term? They have an entire mansion in London that they can stay in. Couldn’t the kids go to a movie, or watch a first run movie in what I’m sure is a huge cinema room at Kensington Palace, invite some friends over and W&K can stop by once they get back from the BAFTAs? I don’t understand how their terminal laziness is just met with a shrug.

    • Becks1 says:

Honestly, something that just occurred to me is – what if the kids are boarding? What if that’s why the school breaks are treated as so sacrosanct? According to their website, you can board anywhere from 5 nights a week to one night on an occasional basis, and 75% of prep students board at least some of the time.

The boarding also makes sense if we talk about Kate spending last year in Bucklebury with her parents.

it seems like a big thing to keep secret but it might explain some of the weirdness, even when the way they delayed telling the kids about Kate’s cancer until the term was over last March – they wanted to wait until the kids were home. (Louis is too young to board though but for the older ones, maybe?)

      • Dee(2) says:

I didn’t realize that their current school was a school that you could board at, but that makes sense from one angle but then it makes their laziness even more apparent from another. Because if they’re boarding, even only a few days a week why can’t they work more? You can’t possibly be doing the school run if your kid is sleeping at the school. I honestly find their weirdness about being attached to their kids bizarre anyway, it feels less like they want to be around their kids and more like they don’t want their kids to get any potential outside influence at this point.

      • Becks1 says:

It definitely makes their laziness more apparent (and it would blow the whole “Kate and William are so hands on” thing out of the water) but maybe that’s why its kept so hush-hush? IDK, I was just looking at the term schedule on the website (good lord, it seems like they’re on break constantly) and noticed the boarding tab. So maybe they’re at AC full time, but maybe not…..they could even be there one or two nights a week.

And I agree, i find the weirdness around their kids to be….well, weird. I love my kids and I have a lot of time with them. but do you know how much they love it if we go out and they have a few hours home alone? Do you know how much 12 year old loves it when he comes home and I’m not there (which is rare, lol) and he has time to get a snack and hang out by himself?

But we’ve long said on here that they have used their kids as shields to avoid working, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they were lying about the boarding, especially if the marriage is in the toilet and they are living separate lives. The kids cant blab about that if the kids dont realize that William is at KP every night. (but Louis would know.)

I dont know. Just another theory that popped into my head.

      • Jais says:

But if the kids are boarding then the daily school runs are an even bigger lie😂. It could also be that they’ve been living almost full time at the Middletons? Or boarding?

      • alteya says:

I don’t think Charles would let Carole take over the grandkids completely like that. He might be indifferent to them but he HATES Carole. I could see Kate with Mummy, two elder kids boarding as Becks1 suggests, youngest one with nannies at Adelaide.

  9. Tina says:

This was really surprising to me. This is one of the few events where they could have actually gotten a tonne of press easily without much work involved. Both of them dressed up on the red carpet surrounded by stars would have been an easy win (in their minds anyway). I’m with Kaiser something is up. The half term excuse doesn’t work..they could easily go away with the kids on Monday morning c’mon.

  10. Liz -L says:

Prob going on half term hol to Mustique. Didn’t Kate say cancer sufferers need sunlight.

    • Chrissy says:

I think it was “chemo patients should get plenty of sunshine!” SMH

    • Gabby says:

That’s what I think. Musquite for KKKate and the kids to be sure. I’m not sure if Peg will join them or vacation elsewhere. It’s odd, because he hungers to hobknob with celebrities, which is a BAFTA guarantee.

  11. PEARL GREY says:

Events like the BAFTAs, state receptions are glamorous, social gatherings where guests dress up and mingle with others, and if they are married or in a couple, they’re expected to attend together and appear affectionate with each other. Cameras are there and will capture all the couples and all their interactions on the red carpet, in the audience and during the after-parties. Pictures and video will be shared widely on social media and newspaper/magazine sites and will attract commentary from the public. Things can’t be edited or redone. Events like regular “work” engagements are not necessarily social events, and some may even be somber in tone, protocol-heavy, routine or family-focused, so couples aren’t expected to be as personable, affectionate or engage in any PDA. If couples act strictly in a “professional” manner, it won’t appear odd. Notice that William and Kate have attended regular work engagements together, like the somber meeting with the Southport attack victims families, the Holocaust event, the family-focused Christmas carol show, the routine Christmas Day church walk, the protocol-heavy greeting for the Qatar state visit, but have largely avoided the events that have the more social aspects like the state reception for Qatar, King Charles Christmas lunch, previously with Kate skipping Earthshot in Singapore and now the BAFTAs. It will be blamed on the children, or Kate not feeling well, but this has been going on for a while. One of them can’t fake it any longer.

    • Nic919 says:

The Bafta show also lasts at least 2 hours and they have to sit next to each other the whole time. And be seen by a whole crowd.

  12. aquarius64 says:

Why the cancellation? The half term excuse is BS because the event is at night. Two hours in and out for the Waleses. William and Kate are going to be disasters when William takes the throne.

    • Jais says:

Yeah, but I’d assume they will be out of town on vacay with the kids or at least one of them will be. I’m curious to see if Kate does any event this week? Maybe she’s already on vacay as Carole extends her mustique 70th birthday party?

      • Eurydice says:

Yes, I think they’re already somewhere on holiday and an announcement of that wouldn’t look good right now – so, they give no explanation. Later, there’ll be a flurry of family photos which they’ll use for the entirety of 2025, for Mother’s Day and birthdays and Christmas, and then we’ll find out where they’ve been.

      • Becks1 says:

Half-term starts 2/14 (friday) so its very possible they already have plans to get out of town ASAP.

But that said – if attending the BAFTAs was a priority for them, it would happen and they would go on vacation the next morning. They dont care about attending, so they dont.

      • Jais says:

William is to show up somewhere for the BAFTAS on Wednesday so he’s in town. But fr, if Kate isn’t seen at all this week, that girl’s in mustique. But maybe she’ll do a surprise appearance as she does. And yes, they could easily go on vacation the next morning…but they’d rather be on vacay.

      • Jaded says:

@Jais — didn’t they say he was doing a video bit for the Baftas? That could have been recorded weeks ago. We’ll all have to be on suntan watch now. The thing I find odd is that he clearly can’t stand being anywhere near her except for the poor acting job he did on the Summer’s Eve video so how can they stand to be on vacation together? Separate living quarters? Separate resorts? Inquiring minds need to know…

      • Becks1 says:

@Jaded I’ve long thought that either they don’t go together (Kate takes the kids skiing, William takes them somewhere else) or they go together but are very separate – if they rent a large private house or stay in a very exclusive/private resort, it would be easy enough to hide that they sleep separately and don’t spend a lot of time together.

      • Bronco says:

@becks1 the rota told us a few years ago they sleep separately. That’s why 4 bed Adelaide makes no sense and was code for he doesn’t live there.

Sep rooms for people who can afford it isn’t a big deal or scandal. I think it’s more they don’t spend time together.

      • jais says:

@Jaded, I could be wrong but the video montage thing I thought was going to be played during the ceremony and tomorrow is an actual visit. I could be wrong though and its just a video tomorrow. I was wrong and thought Kate was out of town already but she showed up somewhere today..?

  13. Jay says:

William (and only William?) is set to appear in a “video package”? Seriously? How freaking lazy do you have to be to send in a pretape? Are the Wails gone on holiday?

I think the mocking of Will last year must have hit home. I initially thought that Charles might have taken a turn, but Chuck is doing events today! So it’s not that. Maybe TOB knows that he is only going to get headlines on par with Harry if he brings his wife in full glam, and he simply doesn’t want to.

  14. Nanea says:

This constant excuse “sorry, can’t, the kids” is getting beyond ridiculous —and, in cases like this, it’s completely unbelievable.

It’s not like the BAFTA date hasn’t been known for a long time, it’s not like mid-term breaks are announced the day before.

Too bad institutions can’t get rid of their royal patrons. BAFTA deserves better than Willnot, who never seems to be interested in the movies anyway.

Harry’s brother wanting to shine a light on young filmmakers all of a sudden instead makes me feel sorry for them, they deserve better. And it’s not like he couldn’t have attended both events.

    • alteya says:

Stephen Fry should have carried through on the idea of dumping William.

    • BQM says:

They really should’ve just given it to Edward who a) will actually show up b) likes his wife c) has a history with acting and production and d) was his fathers successor and Philip was the first royal BAFTA patron. Or give it back to Anne who held it from 1972-2000.

      • sevenblue says:

Yeah, Edward would at least show up each year. I imagine, he would also watch the nominated movies and not make weird and inappropriate sex jokes to the young actresses.

  15. Smart&Messy says:

He never has been Alain Delon category top-shelf handsome, but in hindsight, he did look better shaved.

  16. Jais says:

William did a fair amount for him last week. So I’ve been surprised to not see him or Kate out yet this week. It was pretty funny imo when Kate chose the day before Meghan’s show to do her hospital visit. So I don’t know if they’re trying to be less obvious but also Charles has been doing more stuff this week. I’m still expecting to see them out on March 4th. Unless its half term again.

  17. Me at home says:

Kate may be headed for Mustique or [insert glamorous vacation spot]. We never heard what Ma Middleton did for her 70th, so maybe it’s that? Maybe William’s going too. Or he knows that showing up to BAFTAs alone would raise a gazillion questions about her health and their marriage.

    • Libra says:

Reported last week by a male writer who did” the Carole I know ” article, mustique for her 70ith. Whole family invited. Wales to leave Friday.

    • Me at home says:

Libra, this makes complete sense to me. School break starts Friday. Kate and the kids jump on the plane for Mustique. BAFTAs are on Sunday night so Kate won’t/can’t be there. William goes to Mustique or he doesn’t. If he goes to Mustique, he still has time for his Wednesday event with the actors, whatever that is, before he boards the family plane to Mustique on Friday. If William stays, it’s been explained to him that if he shows up at BAFTAs on Sunday without Kate in tow, the coverage will be wall-to-wall questions about where she is, her health, and their marriage, so he cancels and doesn’t go in either scenario.

  18. SueBarbri33 says:

None of this makes any sense. The Prince and Princess of Wales are on vacation in Mustique and are skipping a *major event* on their patronage calendar, and…crickets? These two are just such terrible flops. And the fact that they use their children as a constant excuse…how old is George now? As someone upthread wondered, are they going to watch the children take baths and sleep? What is going on with this? The fact that there is never any pushback on this from the press or even their “fans” online tells me that somebody somewhere knows exactly what is happening. I hope I live long enough to find out the real story.

  19. Hypocrisy says:

And here I was hoping maybe they had given up with the petty game of only working when the Sussex’s are in the public eye, but I think 🤔 that those that believe they disappeared because they are on holiday for the school break are right. I highly doubt that they are even in the country.

  20. Libra says:

They are both in fear of being “roasted”. They are thin skinned about any criticism because the truth hurts.

    • Giddy says:

Yes. They also obviously don’t enjoy being together, and they are both too self-involved to pull off the look of a happy couple for even one night.

    • sevenblue says:

I don’t think they would be roasted. Especially, considering the british media calls Kate now a cancer survivor, regardless of all the weird phrases the KP used all this time not to call her that.

  21. TN Democrat says:

Both Baldimort and Keener pay way too much attention to Harry and Meghan’s coverage. They know that any major joint appearances they make will be compared to the chemistry and affection Harry and Meghan ooze in photographs and know their awkwardness together has morphed into obvious loathing that registers in pictures. If they do any joint efforts, it will be on social media and carefully controlled/edited to hell and back.

    • Lady Digby says:

Agreed the September video even with the intimacy co ordinator shouting at Will to embrace the moment and think of England, wasn’t very convincing was it? Harry and Meg are loved up and in sinc whereas the other two are very tense and barely intereacting. If Will doesn’t want tongues wagging about the state of his marriage then he should treat her normally in public and be pleasant and polite. Blanking her in public and refusing to acknowledge her like he did at the film premier leaving Tom Cruise to act like a gentleman and escort Kate was horrible.

  22. Deborah1 says:

This came as no surprise to me. It’s just further evidence that something is wrong with the Wales’ marriage. On the few occasions recently when they have appeared together they look like they can’t stand each other. The children’s half term is a pathetic excuse. If William can’t be bothered to turn up for the BAFTAS then they should remove him as president of the organisation just like the Football Association did last year. Unless of course they plan to be in Mustique with the Middletons. That’s also a possibility.

  23. QuiteContrary says:

They really do the most to show how they do the least.

  24. Kingston says:

    @Lady Digby says:

“………..even with the intimacy co ordinator shouting at Will to embrace the moment and think of England, wasn’t very convincing was it?”

This is both funny and true.

And regarding the forced narrative about H&M and divorce, the reason H&M have no intention of responding directly to this mess is the same reason they have made no comment on accusations that they “keep slagging off the royal family” i:e they make no response to these claims; they simply carry on living their life of their own terms, making no mention of the left-behinds, believing that in time, the commonsense of decent people will make them SEE for themselves how ludicrous all the false accusations are, in the face of the truth: that their “look back projects” are their done-and-dusted attempts to set the record straight about their experience in the RF cult and how M in particular was treated; and their love and tight marital bond is visible to all those with eyes to see.

In fact, as folks continue to see H&M’s tight, loving marital bond, more and more folks will begin to look behind the curtain & remember that both H&M hv said that the shitmedia, (“they create the news/not report it”) which has been instructed to say anything nasty about H&M but cant criticize WanK, will write the nasty story which the shitmedia know is about either WanK or chucky and gladys, but they switch out the real names and inserting H&M’s instead. More and ore people are beginning to see this in real time and see the current behavior of Wank and start putting 2 + 2 together for themselves.

  25. Beverley says:

A joint appearance by Slumlord Willy and KKKhate always poses a risk of their sham marriage becoming more obvious. They gotta pick and choose their joint appearances carefully – lest they completely tell on themselves and can no longer hide their estrangement. They just aren’t talented enough actors to consistently keep up the “happy couple” ruse.

The divorce is back on – granted, it probably has been delayed – but Peg is desperate to rid himself of his insipid wife and I doubt she’ll ever be Kween.

  26. Moira says:

Prince William and Kate Middleton are so incompetent that, despite the two of them, and their staff, they committed to being at an attempt that was actually on a school holiday when they know they couldn’t attend. What stunning leadership they have!
