Princess Kate will join the Windsors in May for the 80th anniversary of VE Day

Not even two full months ago, we were being told condescendingly that Kensington Palace would never openly schedule the Princess of Wales for any event for the foreseeable future, all because of her health. They kept repeating “she has good days and bad days” as an explanation for why no one should expect Kate to ever have a work schedule again, and we were supposed to be pleasantly surprised if she showed up for any kind of event. Then William and Kate’s Mustique vacation was outed in the Daily Mail, and suddenly KP can’t schedule and announce events for Kate fast enough. Last week, they announced that Kate and William would go to South Wales once their Mustique vacation was over. Now they’re announcing an appearance for Kate in May, for the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The Princess of Wales will join her husband and the King for the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May this year. Kate Middleton, 43, who has been gradually making a return to public duties following cancer treatment, will make an appearance at the event which commemorates our war heroes, the Mirror has reported.

Charles, 76, will lead a host of royals, including his wife Queen Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh at a ‘special Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey’. According to the outlet, the monarch will also be present, along with other members of The Firm, for events at the Cenotaph on May 8, and the Government will be releasing further details.

A source also told the publication that the King has been ‘determined to pay tribute to our war heroes’ after a turbulent year marked by his own health issues. Elsewhere, the newspaper says sources believe Charles may release a ‘personal tribute’ to World War II heroes as well as those who lost their lives in other conflicts.

It comes as earlier this year, Kate arrived for her first royal ‘away day’ since 2023 as part of her slow and steady return, and visited a sock manufacturer and children’s hospice, of which she has become patron.

[From The Daily Mail]

I understand that for these kinds of big-anniversary events, they make plans way in advance and all of that, especially if it involves King Charles and the rest of the family. It would be weird if Kate didn’t go, and if they didn’t make a point of confirming her attendance, that would be the story. But it does feel like they announced this specifically as part of the “please let this piece of news distract you from the Mustique vacation AND the Sussexes’ activities.”

Meanwhile, the Mail is also running this as an exclusive – Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit DC this week, and it’s “expected” that Donald Trump will formally invite Prince William to visit Washington. A source told the Mail: “President Trump very much enjoyed meeting Prince William in France. He was wowed by William and thinks he’s a great guy. He will officially invite both the Prince and Princess of Wales to visit Washington, but understands if the Princess of Wales’ health issues prevent her from coming.” Sounds about right – while I know the British royals are no strangers to despots and fascists, they might want to think twice about using William in this way. But whatever, I don’t care that much.

Maybe PW can visit the WH and explain to DT that Canada belongs to him.

    • Totoro says:

      Hahahhahahaha! That’s a good one.!
I hope he gets invited to visit. It will be so delightful to see him squirm. What a clown show it will be!

I’m think Meliana and Khate will have lots in common. They can swap tips on how to publicly give the evil eye to their husbands in joint appearances and how to dodge from official duty while getting their blowouts done.

      • Smart&Messy says:

They won’t allow Kate to go, because she can’t be trusted to stay on program. William is hard enough to manage and often bungles things, the foreign office don’t need another idiot. Also, I’m not even convinced Trump will bother with an invitation. Presidents Trump and Musk are very aware how Peg has zero power over things they care about and they don’t give a crap about Europe anyway. Why waste precious lucid hours on Lord Huevo.

      • Nerd says:

They can also swap photos of themselves exposing themselves to the camera like trading cards. Kate probably has more to choose from, but it can be a fun new tradition they can create since neither of them have been able to create anything before.

    • Hypocrisy says:

      👏🏼🤣👏🏼😂👏🏼🤣👏🏼

    • Cathy says:

      Canada is mine Donald
      Mine!

    • Me at home says:

Kate finds foreign travel unbelievably stressful, dontcha know? At least when it involves work not vacation.

      • Yes she does very stressful but trump is a racist like her so you would think these two birds of a feather would like to be together.

      • Betsy says:

@Susan Collins Kate sure is a racist but she also likes to feel popular and it’s not exactly a secret that Trump isn’t.

      • @Betsy; yes but she also loves attention and will do whatever to get that attention so I think she would go if Peg allowed her to join him.

      • Alteya says:

Dumpster fire is popular with his base, the same racist misogynistic base who claim to like Kate because she’s a tradwife. There is enormous crossover of dumpy lovers and Meghan haters aka Kate stans.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

Workshy meeting with Turnip is giving Duke of Windsor meeting Hitler.

  2. Criti Calthinking says:

If Charles is so “determined” to honor war heroes, he should’ve acknowledged the Invictus Games.

  3. Becks1 says:

This is the kind of event where it would be weirder if she didn’t go. But at the same time, announcing her attendance for a Westminster Abbey service months in advance feels weird too.

    • Dee(2) says:

Their horrible communication over the past 18 months is what has put them in this position. The fact that they don’t want to let you know what they’re doing at all, and spent this time last year basically pretending that this woman didn’t exist means that they have to now tell you things that are, or at least should be incredibly obvious.

      • Smart&Messy says:

You are right. Based on the past few months, I bet her not attending was absolutely in the cards. And they would not even gice much of an explanation, because people are now conditioned to fill in the gaps. She had cancer at some point and is recoveringfrom something that occured in the recent past and she has kids.

      • Robert Phillips says:

William didn’t want her mentioned last year at all. He was trying out the divorce concept. But then all the backlash of Kate not being seen at all hit. And they had to bring her back. The cancer pr kept the press off their backs for a little while. But William isn’t really getting any press by himself. A few photos and then he’s forgotten in a few hours. So they are having to bring her back. Because no one cares at all about the rest of them. And I bet everyone talks about her clothes on these occasions. Just so the press will go on for a couple of days.

    • Smart&Messy says:

Exactly, why point it out. Enough with the bs that she needs to be applauded every single time she steps out of the house. It’s her job and as a balcony-certified senior working royal, she should be there.

    • Lady Esther says:

Right? This reminded me of the shenanigans around Trooping last year when the MoD announced that Kate would be attending, and then KP huffily slapped them down with a “if she attends, we will announce it not you.” Then Kate released the video Staring Up In the Sky By A Tree and ended up attending after all. I wonder if it will be as big a mess this time!

    • Yes it feels like Chuckles has put this out there so she has to do the bare minimum but she can always pull out her “cancer “ card so she can skip this event.

    • Nic919 says:

I don’t think they have ever announced this far ahead in advance for Kate on anything except maybe a tour with William. But I suspect this was put out because she won’t be doing much prior to the VE Day events and they didn’t want people to think she will skip serious events.

    • Gabby says:

One look at Chuckles shows they shouldn’t be announcing anything that far in advance for him either.

  4. Hypocrisy says:

Well that should save the monarchy … 🙄they have insulted there own veterans for the past two IG games that I know of.

  5. Anne says:

Canada isn’t the baldy egg’s. It’s part of the British Commonwealth but is not a Crown or UK possession.

    • Laura D says:

@Anne – KCIII is the official Head of State for Canada, so unless there is a constitutional change before he dies, William will inherit the position. Which is why the current monarch and his heir should stop with all the cosying around Trump.

    • Nic919 says:

Lots of Canadians are wondering why Charles has been so quiet since this annexation talk directly threatens Charles sovereignty as head of state of Canada. It’s only proving again how useless a monarchy has been for Canada.

William has an interest in this as direct heir. If he visits the U.S. and does nothing for Canada, then what is the point of these soft diplomacy bozos?

      • Convict says:

The BRF cares not about the Commonwealth realms outside the UK. William only visited Australia as an adult the year he was getting engaged. That was the clue. He wanted to drum up Aus support. But it’s the British who keep them in obscene luxury so that is all they care about.

      • Gabby says:

Because he’s a gutless coward. Canada, with all due respect, that should be obvious.

      • Jaded says:

@Gabby — with all due respect Canada does not give two shits for Charles. That should be obvious.

    • Jaded says:

Canada is made up of approximately 89% crown land. Crown land, sometimes called public land, is land owned by Canada’s federal or provincial governments. Authority for control of these public lands rests with the Crown, hence their name. Less than 11% of Canada’s land is in private hands; 41% is federal crown land and 48% is provincial crown land. Thus, 89% of land in Canada is Crown land. King Charles is our head of state, like it or not (most here don’t).

Next, Charles can’t get involved in anything political, it’s inherent upon the monarch to stay out of choosing one side or the other. It’s Congress that has to approve accepting Canada as a new state and it would require a minimum of 60 votes in the 100-member chamber to bring a bill to the floor — an insurmountable threshold for all kinds of key legislation. As for Canada, we would have to hold a referendum to gauge voters’ interests in joining the U.S. before more detailed aspects of the process could begin — and that’s almost certainly a non-starter.

      • Nic919 says:

There is no serious desire for this on the side of Canada so it would have to be taken by force.

Americans don’t want guerilla warfare at their doorstep. It’s a lot easier to not care about something across an ocean but any serious military moves would ultimately bring down both countries.

The U.S. lost in Vietnam and Afghanistan and those were countries that didn’t have well developed militaries plus access to the nukes. Canada has agreed to refrain from having nukes but they could get dirty bombs made quickly.

      • Jaded says:

Trump isn’t going to invade Canada. The Canada talk is just trolling by the liar-in-chief, and if he did it would instantly increase the support of all other NATO countries for Canada and give Trump a huge black eye. The Greenland thing probably won’t happen either, only if the residents of Greenland decide that being a territory of Denmark is no longer in their best interests. As for Panama, the US and Panama have something called the Neutrality Agreement which guarantees the permanent neutrality of the Panama Canal, which would remain accessible to all nations in both times of peace and war. The only way Trump could send in troops would be if another country threatened military action against Panama. Economic sanctions and expanded investment on the canal infrastructure and businesses are probably the only means by which the US could justify a new agreement giving them more control.

  6. Tessa says:

It doesn’t speak well for William if Trump likes him. They are two of a kind.
Will is mag a all the way

    • Hypocrisy says:

Somehow I honestly don’t think that the 🍊 🍑 thinks about Peg or befriending him at all, and with the protests and destruction that has already happened and will continue too happen I can’t see this helping the popularity of the BRF in the states, but it may just destroy it beyond repair. People are angry, and most of those are the fools that voted for him. The rest of us expected him to dismantle the constitution because we believed what he said and read project 2025..

    • Jay says:

Agent Orange is just doing what he does best – it’s his clumsy attempt at picking off a weak link (William) and causing destabilization. He’s may be hoping that cozying up to the son will make the father uneasy, and William is no statesman – much easier to deal with by far.

    • Eurydice says:

William’s a lot of things, but I don’t think he’s about making anything great again, not even the monarchy. He’s about sitting on his ass and spending his inheritance.

      • HeatherC says:

I think he would embrace it. MAGA is about the return to “traditional values” (where women had no voice or autonomy, and LGBTQ+ didn’t exist, and white males of Christian faith were idolized).

He’d love a return to everyone loving and never questioning the monarchy

    • Gabby says:

I suspect that Trump’s kudos and admiration makes Peg a bit uncomfortable. He wants to be respected by the right kind of people. The people that respect Harry.

  7. Weatherby says:

This flurry of Kate-inclusive articles is interesting to me.

We know that nearly all UK-based media is on the Windsors’ payroll. But at times, they have competing allegiances: to that of Prince William and to that of the court of King Charles. Camilla, with her deep media connections, and Charles, with his absolute authority over the purse strings, will always win out. Their message carries the day, as it were. I believe this was on display last week with a small prod for William from Charles to get off his lazy arse, and the insistence that the Wales’ were holidaying together. For his part, Charles seems very much intent on keeping the Wales marriage together. Whether for PR, or for spite (Charles is clearly petty enough to get a smug satisfaction out of watching his obstinate son twist in the wind), Kate wants back into the fold and Charles seems only too willing to oblige.

Their marriage seems to me to be once again on very icy ground, but Ma Midds has navigated such torrid waters before. I think this year will be interesting for Royal watching, as William grows increasingly sombre and agitated in his wife’s presence, and Kate and Carole grasp harder to their narrative of “perfect family, nothing to see here.”

    • Libra says:

Charles behaving much like the old Joe Kennedy who reportedly bribed Jackie with cash to stay married to Jack. It worked.

      • Weatherby says:

Except Kate doesn’t need to be bribed. It’s William who is being dragged along, kicking and screaming, and very obviously not on board.

At least the sexual assault bum-groping has stopped. Why Carole ever thought that was a cute and winning strategy is beyond me. It’s intentionally antagonizing and, like most things that Kate does, very childish.

      • Lee says:

It doesn’t seem like Charles wants them together anymore than Willy does. She wouldn’t be benched and she would be going to Italy. There’s a reason Charles took that from her & couldn’t be bothered to even attend her laughable Carole service. No love lost for Charles when Katie is gone, for sure.

      • Libra says:

@weatherby, you commented that Charles seems intent on keeping the marriage together. My comment was in response to that. Also, @Lee posted that Charles doesn’t want them together anymore than William. So here we have two opposing views which makes the conversation even more interesting. I am on the side of Charles not wanting another royal divorce as it will call attention to his own despicable behavior towards Diana.

      • Alteya says:

Libra a w&k divorce makes Charles and Camilla look better.

      • Tessa says:

Jackie really wanted out. she gave birth to a stillborn daughter while her husband was partying and vacationing in Europe. He had to be called by his father and told him to get back to see his wife. RFK was the one who was sitting by Jackie’s bedside. Joe had to really do some talking to her to persuade her. She was fed up. He wanted JFK to be President so badly and I think this eclipsed any real concern for Jackie.

    • Jaded says:

I still maintain that Charles is deliberately keeping his son’s sham of a marriage together because if William were to bail on it, who knows what demons would fly out of Pandora’s Box to vilify William. Why do you think Ma Midd is back in the royal fold? Because she knows exactly what happened in late December 2023 and exactly why Kate went MIA for so long. The carefully contrived but badly executed cancer story, phony photos, mushy videos, and differing stories all point to Charles controlling the puppet strings of both his son and DIL to put on a “we’re fine, nothing here to see” front. Kate’s good days and bad days aren’t from her recovery from cancer, they’re an agreed-upon set of rules whereby she only has the bare minimum to do so she doesn’t put her foot in it, and a way of keeping whatever’s going on with her and her incandescent husband from the public. I also think her good days and bad days are based on the amount of medication she may be taking to help her deal with the intolerable situation she’s in. You should have been more careful about what you wished for Kate. Is the Faustian bargain you made all you care about?

      • Weatherby says:

Jaded, this is what I believe as well.

There is inconsistent messaging (consistently inconsistent, I might add) because there are two competing Courts. Remember that it was *Charles’ office* that released the cancer announcement video, and Charles who stepped in to clean up that mess. This after William had spent months clumsily rolling out Hot Single Dad messaging, and after it seemed KP had forgotten Kate even existed. Nothing was signed with her name, no pictures of her on their shared instagram. William was trying to finally shake her off for good, but then the cancer video came along to all but ensure he couldn’t publicly go through with it. What kind of a cad would he be to ditch his cancer-stricken wife, after all?

Moves and counter-moves. As King Charles holds the majority of the cards in the deck, this effectively leaves William powerless to rid himself of the wife that he openly both ignores and grimaces towards. This new article is promising her appearance, thereby once again tying KP’s hands.

We can be sure of one thing: Charles knows what ugliness Carole Middleton has hanging over William’s head, and Charles is not keen to see the monarchy fall on his reign due to the stupidity of his eldest son. He’s simply waited too long for this.

In much the same way that Charles had to wait until the Queen Mother had passed before marrying Camilla, now too must William wait to divorce his wife until Charles has passed.

      • Lee says:

When the royals want something like Camilla accepted or Meghan out, they go full scale. Charles didn’t go to her Carol thing, Kate sometimes is allowed to wear the sapphire engagement ring-like it’s a tiara loan and Charles took Italy away from her. I think a deal was made but I’m sure Carole had to sign something stating she had to be quite and if the blackmail was as severe honestly w the cancer lie they could always just take her out. It’s awful but it’s the royals for you. I just personally don’t see Charels doing much for Kate- just following some deal that was made last year but that deal doesnt seem forever. Carole does not appear back in the fold.

  8. Amy Bee says:

Not surprised that Kate will be at these events. The eagerness to be seen next Trump is weird but then I remember that the British establishment was pro-Hitler until he started invading other countries. The Royal Family’s cozing up to Trump is likely going to cause problems for them in Canada though. Charles has to remember that he’s also King of Canada not just the UK.

  9. Tessa says:

Maybe Trump wants wills advice on how to achieve peace in the middle East. Will said he can achieve peace.

    • Hypocrisy says:

I’m sure they both can compare notes on being slumlords and robbing the sick and poor to enrich themselves. They have that in common.

  10. Jais says:

Lordy, I’d already forgotten that they couldn’t announce much bc there were good and bad days. So yea this is a swerve. So I guess there’s more good days which is good? I’m just waiting till we swerve back with an article about how Kate is still being careful not to take on too much. Mustique was exhausting. All the sun.

    • Weatherby says:

Personally, I see this as Charles issuing orders to William’s court: Kate will be in attendance, there is no benching her like you’ve done before.

Otherwise, you’re right, they’ve made a point of *not* announcing things in advance. This abrupt change in plans is telling us something.

      • jais says:

It def could be Charles issuing orders or even just KP realizing how bad skipping the BAFTAS for a Mustique vacation looked.

      • Lee says:

I don’t see it like that. I think some event she was benched but I see this as- get her out and about and prove she isn’t sick, which can speed up the path back to divorce.

  11. sevenblue says:

Yeah, Will really should show everyone how good he is getting along with Trump. I am sure, that is gonna help his declining popularity with younger Brits. 😂😂

  12. FancyPants says:

So what are they going to say when W&K have another fight before then and she refuses to go and/or he refuses to let her?

  13. Tessa says:

Kate will probably have those surprise visits

  14. aquarius64 says:

I am laughing at the prospect of William and Kate coming to DC. The US press will asks questions about the Sussexes to the Waleses’ faces in the Diplomatic Room. Trump will get off some cheapshots about Harry and Meghan in front on them, and William and Kate are going to be required to take it. Kate will have to be friendly to a man who made unsavory comments about her topless photos in that French magazine. Add Elon Musk for the ick factor. These are optics the Firm and No 10 don’t want. Trump and Musk are cratering in the polls and there are protests across the country because Trump and Musk are slashing programs, benefits and jobs. And Canadians may not be too happy that the future king and queen consort of Canada are being cozy with a man who hit them with tarrifs and trying to push Canada into becoming the 51st state. This is a diplomatic landmine Wiliam and Kate don’t have the skill set needed to navigate through. It’s going to be a mess, and it’s karma for the Waleses for what they did to the Sussexes.

    • Tessa says:

William does not care apparently about the awful comments trump made about diana.

    • BeanieBean says:

Kate wants a Diana moment, when Diana danced with John Travolta. They may stick her with Muskrat, though. She should call in sick.

      • FancyPants says:

She’s going to be deeply disappointed by whatever racist trolls Trump can still get to show up at the White House… the thought of her trying to waltz with Kid Rock or Kanye West is actually pretty funny!

      • jais says:

Lol, this!!! She’d be dancing with Kid Rock. or Zachary Levi. Or omg Elmo!!! Ewwwww. I doubt she’d ever dance with Kanye because…well.

    • QuiteContrary says:

“Trump will get off some cheapshots about Harry and Meghan in front on them, and William and Kate are going to be required to take it.”

William is petty AF. He’d be secretly pleased by this. As would Kate, his partner in petty (and not much else).

  15. Noor says:

Actually from some of the photos for the France visit it would appear that Trump was rather off hand with William while William appeared overeager to please.. In Trump’s calculation , William is not Queen Elizabeth or even King Charles

    • Christine says:

William did look subservient in those photos. Considering Trump is an actual cuckold at this point, it’s pretty hilarious.

  16. Jay says:

The first story, about Kate’s planned attendance at VE day, was likely from BP/Charles. It has the vibe of “You had better be at Great-Auntie Mary’s 100th birthday party or I’m taking your Nintendo for the whole summer”. Chuck is not immune to using the promise of Kate’s appearance to try and promote his events, especially if the Windsors are being overshadowed from across the pond. It has happened before, although sometimes with pushback from KP. It will be interesting to see if that happens again (well, once the Wails have returned from vacay).

Truthfully, though, Charles can announce that everyone is attending the ceremony all he wants – but we’ve seen that the Wails do not feel obligated to do anything they don’t want to do. They very well could just call in sick on the morning of, or plead a lack of childcare arrangements, or come late (as they did for the coronation).

    • BeanieBean says:

Very true. This announcement means nothing with respect to W&Ks attendance. They could both skip out again, zero thought or remorse.

    • Lee says:

Kate doesn’t boost events anymore though. They did the big one at the trooping last year and no one cared after her being gone for half a year- she was booed heavily in fact. I think this is get her out and prove she isn’t sick.

  17. Eurydice says:

My eye landed on “Charles, 76, will lead a host of royals…” – as if there’s more than a handful of them. It’ll be the same dreary bunch, wearing uniforms with fake medals, random outfits with weird headgear and Kate will have a new coatdress. I’ll make a note in my calendar.

    • BeanieBean says:

Yep, at Westminster Abbey, where we’ve seen the same procession dozens of times already. Same people, same dumb outfits, same same same.

  18. Mslove says:

Who’s going to do the work when Peg becomes king? It won’t be Peg & Keen. I guess we’ll be seeing the York girls doing work. And maybe pedo Andy can make a comeback. He can do some work, too. I forgot about Sophie and Edwin, they’ll have to step up. I hope Anne retires, she needs a break after her mysterious accident.

  19. Angied says:

I remember when Meghan and Harry attended ceremonies at Westminster Abbey it was national news now that they are gone it’s all local. All kinds of channels here would show the entire event now not so much. You may get a short blurb of the event on news but not the entire event as when Meghan was there.

  20. Lau says:

Ugh, William is going to think that he looks like a hot single dad in Washington.

  21. Tn Democrat says:

Willy’s sorry ass would promise him Canada because he is bigly mad that Harry got good press during the Invictus Games. Keep his ass away from mango and his minions. The adults need to be in the room and the 42 year old man child can go count the money he grifts from tax payers. The Commonwealth needs to stick together and Willy isn’t a natural leader that will accomplish anything except making gaffes that him and the people he is supposed to represent look weak and foolish. Can you imagine the spin when that toothy grinning fool is photographed with muskrat, mango and his minions?

  22. Nic919 says:

That header photo of kate in the main page is something else.

    • lanne says:

It’s giving “I just spoke to the manager to complain loudly about my mild discomfort” vibes. Her makeup is reminding me of the MAGA woman makeup tutorials going around on social media (how to use makeup to make you look harsh, unmosturized, lined, and frosted)

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Yeah – her and her gurning for the camera is quite something isn’t it. You can always tell when she’s faking it – you get these expressions.

  23. Lady Digby says:

Does Trump usually comment on how good looking men are? I find the comment about Will being better looking in person than he is in photos really an odd, backhanded compliment.

  24. Penny says:

Perhaps they are getting this announcement in early to fluff over wherever the Wales’s are trotting off to next for jolly Easter hols.

    • jais says:

I mean, yeah. If they follow the kids’ schedules then they just have a month to 6 weeks till they jet off again. How much can they appease the tabloids to not report on their next vacay?

  25. VilleRose says:

That header image of Kate, the “I’M SO KEEN!” face. Not sure Kate would want to go to the US and have photo ops with Donald Trump? I know William met him but that was in Paris I think for the whole Notre Dame reopening? Neutral ground. Really hope Charles does not roll out the red carpet for Trump like his mother did the first time around. As for announcing attendance for Kate so far advance, it’s kind of desperate to confirm a Kate sighting 4 months in advance?
