  3. LindyLou says:

Until I saw his picture, I had no idea he had been struggling with his health so I googled. What an inspiration that he battled cancer and won and seemed to have a great sense of humour thoughout it all. Good for him.

Roger, you are the only film critic I trust. Just was on your site man, and I will see Wolfman instead of Valentine’s Day for our date movie–just ‘cos you said so. You RAWK!

  8. gg says:

Roger is the bomb and he is a great inspiration.

  9. Johanna says:

Sherri Shepherd‘s ex spoke very well in his open letter. There is no way to judge a couple’s relationship especially if you’re not directly involved but the way people compose themselves says a lot & I’m on his bandwagon.

The best movie about the olympics is Cool Runnings, hands down. “It’s bobsled time!”

  11. EB says:

I’m not surprised about Ebert’s brilliant tweet – Mr. Ebert has always been an excellent film critic and a great writer. I encourage you to check out his blog – it’s really good.

  14. jzhz says:

From a black girl: thanks, Roger Ebert. Nice to see someone standing up for us in a classy way.

  15. topher says:

So I guess black men should have to want to sleep with white woman? I mean really. can you not see how ridiculous it is, I mean it is a personal choice. Some people like tall woman some like short. Get over it. I have read several articles where black men have said they don’t want to sleep with white woman. Where is the outrage. Oh I forgot it is not politically correct. His wording was crude but he was much cruder about the white woman he has slept with, Do black woman really care if John Mayer wants to sleep with them. i mean come on. Is it some sort of validation. Spike Lee wouldn’t want to sleep with me. And it really doesn’t phase me in the slightest

  16. LovelyGirl says:

He dated Oprah back in the days. They were very secretive about their relationship. They showed a clip about it on E! News

Violet Affleck is ALWAYS smiling. I love that kid!

@ Topher…i’ll just copy and paste a portion of my post from the other day about this… “there is nothing wrong with his preferences” “HOWEVER the way he compared his d*** to David Duke, a well known KKK member is beyond offensive. He’s pretty much saying that while he finds some black women pretty, he could never sleep with them because his d*** is repulsed by them, this goes well beyond having preferences as he’s obviously harboring preconceived notions that can’t simply be explained by having a personal preference. This is man who was part of a group that killed black americans. It’s especially disgusting relating it in terms to his feelings towards black women, white supremacists were happy to rape black women because we didn’t mean s*** to them. This is not a term/analogy that one should use to designate a “preference” for who you date/sleep with. Anyone out there defending ANY of his comments are truly idiots. This has nothing to do with black women needing validation.

I hope this helps to open your eyes as to why people were offended at this remark, one of many ignorant a** comments he made in this interview…telling people to get over it isn’t that simple when HE compared his d**k to a KKK member. My personal opinion, if you simply dismiss anyone based on their skin color you are prejudiced.

  19. Shannon says:

I loved what Roger had to say about the movie Valentine’s Day: “‘Valentine’s Day’ is being marketed as a Date Movie. I think it’s more of a First-Date Movie. If your date likes it, do not date that person again. And if you like it, there may not be a second date.”

  20. lrm4joy says:

    topher:
you took the words right out of my mouth! Thankyou-I completely agree,it’s a complete double-standard.

And yea, mayer spoke much more crudely about simpson, honestly!!! he just said he’s not sexually attracted to black women. big effin deal!!!!
like you said, for sure, spike lee wouldnt date me…it’s his choice,or his attraction preference.

Mayer made the mistake of bringing up david duke and equating it.he should have just said no comment or that he’s not attracted sexually to every type of woman-period end.

  21. Sigh. says:

    topher —

It his not his preference to not date black women that is the problem, it’s his decision to link his (non-)preference to a known former Grand Wizard of The Ku Klux Klan (“David Duke c*ck”), in attempts to be funny. THEN turn around in the same interview and align himself with the same group of people…”politically correct” or not, it’s insulting to CONSUMERS of many colors/orientation.

To not want to date someone out of race is one thing, to use a hate-monger’s name “in jest,” and then GROUP it with a casually slung racial/sexual slur in the same public setting, is another.

Spike Lee’s hardline attitude has also caused him more trouble than tribute. By his own race, and others.

  22. L says:

@Topher… Black women are often easy targets and scapegoats in the media. Even a sector of men from our own race put us on blast (why? I dont know – I’ve never met these people, and live my life by the golden rule). So it does cut some of us deeply when we hear yet another defamatory account where we are specifically and pointedly excluded.

But hey, we live in a society that likes to group, order, categorize, and weigh the value of things – and someone always has to come in on the bottom.

Unfortunately for black women – it is our group very often.

Hope that helps you understand a little bit more, if you actually care enough to think a little bit more empathetically about it.

I suspect though that until you walk a mile in a black woman’s shoes – you would never ever come close to understanding. Yet, I felt compelled to explain.

  23. kelly says:

    cool roger!
john will never be that cool

  24. cjp says:

    topher:

lol i feel you. My boyfriend will not date white women. its his personal preference. I am equally attracted to white and black men but i absolutely love black men and their embodiment of my past and future. I used to have pictures of white boys plastered all over my room but i never dated one. And thats where what i feel about John Mayers comments comes in. It does make you feel like, am i not good enough for you even to consider idk a liason with me? I felt this way for a long time becuase white guys never paid me any attention. or at least they didnt tell me. So i totally get why his comments were insensitive.

I do think it very narrow to limit yourself to one or two races. Love is everywhere in everything. You may have a preference but be open. Its painful on every end to not be liked because of what race you are. There are plenty of Black men who wont date Black women and visa versa. And honestly i think that hurts more that john Mayer not wanting me.

  25. Giraffe99 says:

I don’t think it’s the fact that he is not attracted to black women that’s the problem, it’s they way he communicated that fact, ‘white supremacist dick’, which is upsetting people. Why not, just say ‘I’m personally not attracted to black women’ and also his comment about the ‘n’ word as well, I think added to all the anger.

  26. Jazz says:

    God bless you Roger Ebert!!

  27. lena says:

@giraffe99…. you are making to much sense lol, people just don’t get it, they just look at it as a “preference”. and i’ll say it again, if you only base your “preference” on skin color, you are most like harboring subconcious prejudices about that person.

  28. journey says:

maybe the real reason mayer doesn’t get up close and personal with black women is because black women are way too smart and way too hip to ever let him get within five miles of their personal parts!

  29. L says:

    Lena u rock!

  30. Giraffe99 says:

@Lena, you are so right, a lot came out in this interview, to suggest that this man has issues (for want of better word) with both black people and women, which I find personally disturbing.

  31. d says:

Mayer is just another guy intimated by women who have a backbone, regardlessof skin colour. He’ll dress it up in all kinds of bullsh**, but really, he’s just a loudmouth; the mouthy kid at the back of the schoolbus, thinking he’s cool when he’s just scared and intimated by everything around him. I wouldn’t waste too much energy on the guy. Ebert rules.

  32. girl says:

I’m guessing he was three sheets to the wind and had that typical, alcohol-induced loss of inhibitions at that interview?

The KKK reference wasn’t funny or clever or endearing. It was repulsive. The inference was that he is too good for a black woman which is far, far, far from true.

  33. whateva says:

i’ve never understood his mojo ANYway. he may THINK everyone wants to f*ck him, but he’s w-r-o-n-g. (eww)

  34. Delina says:

CJP made the most valid point:
“Its painful on every end to not be liked because of what race you are.”

and to me regarding the John Mayer situation this is the bottom line, because no one has control over what race they are, a preference is one thing prejudice to me seems entirely different.

  35. Brooke says:

gosh, Eli Roth is so darling. And Zachary Quinto, too! I am obviously hooked on a type.

  36. Aspie says:

    You ROCK Roger!!!

  37. ItsComeToThis says:

Lena always addresses the silly comments, making it reduntant for me to add more. Many missed the point about why there was such outrage in response to Mayer’s comments. The “hood pass” and “white supremacist” nonsense he spewed flew right over their heads.

It would be quite nice if Topher could point out instances where famous black men have made offensive statements about white women and their strong aversion to dating them. From the top of my head, I cannot think about any. I do understand that there are black men who have seen the struggles their parents faced and heard about how the older members of their families were discriminated against during Segregation. With this in mind, many of them would feel it best to date only a black woman.

However, I cannot recall an instance where I have heard one of them make a discriminatory, derogatory statement regarding their disinclination to date a white woman; in an interview no less, in such distateful terms.

L, I agree with you. Until they walk a mile in a black woman’s shoes and hear the nonsense they deal with everyday, they just will not get it. Who reading about the responses to Mayer’s comments, could honestly believe we were upset about his preference? I could care less.
