Donald Trump was one of two prominent men choosing to wear blue to Pope Francis’s funeral. I know we’re all in hell right now and there is no bottom, but “wearing black to a state funeral” is one of those dress-code rules which civil leaders can and should adhere to. The other man in blue was Prince William. I guess they’re blue peas in a pod. Some suggested that William and that ugly orange man didn’t wear black because they’re not Catholic. Um, all civil dignitaries and world leaders, of all religions, wore black.
Surprisingly, Melania Trump came out too. There was a resurgence of Fauxlania conspiracies because the “Melania” who left the White House (en route to Rome) did not look a bit like Melania. I think they switched women on Air Force One, because Original Melania made it to the funeral. Mel was dressed appropriately for a pope’s funeral. Or a Madonna video, either/or.
Some assorted Trump/politics news. Trump’s approval ratings are in the toilet, because all of the people who voted for him are shocked that they’re getting exactly what they voted for. Trump keeps talking about running for reelection in 2028 as well. If only every democracy-watcher said that very thing last year, that if Trump got back into the White House, there would be no more democracy. Trump also sat down with Time Magazine for a “first 100 days” interview. The interview was completely unhinged and Trump came across like a doddering, senile moron. U up, George Clooney?
And finally, European leaders (I think mainly President Macron and Keir Starmer) stage-managed Trump into another meeting with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy while they were all in Italy. Trump came out of that meeting wondering aloud if Vladimir Putin actually wants to end the war in Ukraine, which some people are taking as a good sign. Don’t get your hopes up.

For someone so worried about what Zelensky wore at the Oval Office he sure knows how to make a fool of himself. Black was worn by everyone, except him.

Trump, Biden, and William all wore blue. I think it was a security issue. So that they could all be easily seen in a sea of black.
Biden wore a black suit with a blue tie. It wasn’t a blue suit like Trump and William.
The King of Sweden was there. He wore black, so that’s not an excuse.
William is the only one who sees himself as more important than actually world leaders who make decisions that impact the lives of people in their country and the world as a whole. William would never be put at the same level as a current or former president of the United States, even whenever he becomes king. There is a reason the UK PM is also there. William is merely a figurehead who could have been replaced by any other royal, including Edward, because they don’t hold any real power.

There’s a group photo and there were a 5 or 6 more men wearing blue suits. Not as bright as Trump’s, more like Bill’s.
I think William’s suit is actually closer to the color of Trumps because in every photo there seems to be a variation in what color blue he’s wearing. There are even some photos where his suit appears to be closer to the color of Trump’s suit. Regardless of what others are wearing, as the future king he should hold true to what the late Queen would have definitely done which is wear black, after all they are to always have black clothes available for such somber occasions.
I swear I read in some fashion magazine, or maybe one of those old ‘lady’s guide’ books from the late 19th/early 20th century, that ‘proper’ funeral attire colors were: black if you’re family, grey if you’re a friend, navy blue for everyone else. Something like that. But I think State Funerals such as this, it’s all black all the time for everyone. trump just doesn’t care.

Wondering if Putin wants to end the war he started is not the same as stating the obvious—he can end it anytime by withdrawing all troops and ceasing air bombardments. Melania is Slovenian and most of them are devoted catholics. Im not surprised she went. Im not a Christian and never was, do you Christians expect from everyone to wear black? Are your rules a must for everyone? Arent dark colours enough for people who are not catholic?
@Alla – In the western world, it is customary to wear black at funerals, whether you are Catholic or not. In devoutly Catholic countries like Spain, the women will even wear black underwear.
I say “western world’ because I have witnessed a Buddhist funeral in Sri Lanka where the mourners wore white, as is their custom.
Devotedly Catholic Spain permitted gay marriage well before the US, allows abortion and is much more socially liberal than the USA. I don’t know where you got the idea that people wear black underwear to funerals.
Deborah, I’ve been to a handful of Catholic funerals in Arizona. People do not all wear black by any measure. They just wear their nice Sunday clothes, which might mean their best T-shirt.
I would expect the actual Pope’s funeral to expect a more formal dress code.
On my tv, his suit showed as Electric Blue! I’m sure that’s why he wore it, so he could be seen in crowd shots! At the funeral of a beloved Pope! Predictably shameless as always.
@alla, I was raised Catholic and sombre colors were always fine for funerals but, yes, most adults would wear black. Where I grew up there was no strict rule. Unlike the case here where it is a State funeral where there’s an actual dress code!
I’ve been to many Protestant funerals and a few Catholic funerals in the US. Family members usually wear black, although sometimes children wear white. Everyone else wears dark colors — black, black and white, navy. There’s a bit of a range. Occasionally, family members might be asked to wear something in a favorite color of the deceased — so: black suits with a favorite-color tie would not be unusual. As Mayp said, though, this funeral has a dress code, so the expectation would be to follow it — or to get as close as you can. Maybe he only has one suit?
Depends… If it’s a state funeral like this one, then you should wear black, it’s the Pope’s funeral, so, yes, black…. If it’s another funeral, sombre colours are fine, navy blue, dark brown.. I don’t think people care much about it nowadays.

At the funerals I have been to, (Germany) everybody wore black, catholic or other. The men black suits, women black dress or skirt over the knee and shoulders covered or also black suit and closed shoes.
But I grew up in a upper-middle class rather conservative family, this might not be representative.
I grew up in what’s considered an impoverished area in the UK and where most folk would be either be Christian, agnostic and atheist. After attending a few funerals I’d say most don’t have a suit never mind a black one so it’s dark trousers, white shirt, black tie and whatever dark jacket they have.
I now live in rural France and funeral attendees tend to wear whatever as long as it’s neat and tidy, there doesn’t seem to be a ‘dress code’ as such. That could again be the area as it’s a poor part of the region.
This is a funeral for the Pope so even though there would be some who mightn’t be as concerned about what they wear at most funerals, these are religious people as well as politicians and dignitaries who are being seen on a global scale at the funeral of the highest holy figure, the Pope. So there would be a higher standard and expectation regarding what they wear because this is in part honoring this religious figure one final time.

The Vatican has always had dress codes for entering its buildings and a stricter one for meeting with a Pope and an even stricter code for papal funerals. Francis relaxed some of the rules – navy blue was okay for papal audiences, cream or beige were okay for people who held some positions of rank in other religions, and women didn’t have to cover their hair, so Ivanka in her Bride of Beetlejuice costume and Melanlia’s Jackie K cosplay looked ridiculous when they met him. The Vatican tightened the rules again for the funeral and every attendee was given advance notice

I agree, Bumblebee. The inside of the Bascilica was absolutely stunning and to think that it was built at a time before heavy machinery! I can’t imagine how many workers it took to raise those columns in place! Or the slabs of marble.

Trump wanted to be at the funeral like as if it were a gala or chic event where all the cool kids were going. It was a religious leader who loudly opposed Trump’s deportation schemes, a person who called out Trump’s sh-t to the entire world! The poor vatican had to put this known villain in the front row, knowing the ego and position they were dealing with.
Converted Catholic Vance made up an entire theory with a latin name, “Ordo Amoris” to justify fitting the cruelty into Catholic theology and Francis IMMEDIATELY called it out for the crock of sh-t it is. These two have no shame, no reflection on Francis’ message directed TO THEM in front of the whole world. Gawd.

The blue suit…to me it’s fine. It’s not hot pink, It’s doesn’t have Pope Francis’ face on it, lol! Granted, my standards are LOW, but both Agent Orange and TOB just barely stepped over them. Barely.
I think what it does illustrate, though, is how out of touch and isolated they both might be. Two navy suits in a sea of black, grey, and other dark colours wouldn’t be noticeable. But it seems like the other leaders (well, their staff) might have discussed wardrobes ahead of time and coordinated to make sure nobody stands out. But, no surprise that the two guests with the weakest social skills missed that memo – neither of them are particularly interested in other people, and I would readily believe that other world leaders avoid their calls. Both of them seem like self- involved bores.
Maybe TOB was hoping that he could get out of attending until the very last minute? Regardless, he made such a big deal of hiring a new valet last year – you would think that they could handle this?

It’s TOB in reference to a cover article (I think it was Royah Nikka?) that was attempting to present him as a serious statesman, stone-faced and wearing his best military chic, yet hilariously titled “The Other Brother”, as if he was a forgotten, discarded sibling instead of the heir to the throne. It was a perfect encapsulation of how he desperately wishes to be perceived vs how even his own pet reporters see him. So TOB he will always be, at least to me!

They showed on YouTube Air Force one landing. Trump and Malania got off the plane kissed she got in the limo and he got on the helicopter. It looked like the one that got on the plane, so who knows. Maybe the real one stayed in Rome to spend her birthday with friends.
