James Taylor played the Beatles hit “In My Life” to the in memoriam clip at the Oscars last night. It included several directors, producers, actors, cinematographers and executives I’d never heard of who no doubt made an impact in the industry. There was even a public relations guy, writers, and a sound editor. Michael Jackson was included, as were other famous losses like Natasha Richardson, Brittany Murphy, and David Carradine. Two actresses we lost last year were notably absent, though: Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcett. I don’t understand how they could include Michael Jackson but “forget” Farrah Fawcett, who died on the same day. Both Farrah and Bea were involved in films, as Michael K at D-Listed points out. Plus they included Michael Jackson and it’s not like he was known for much more than his music. The people responsible for the Oscars admit that they have to cut people due to time and that their choices aren’t necessarily popular.
RadarOnline.com caught up with Academy Awards rep Leslie Unger after the show who said, “It is highly unlikely that we forgot about Farrah Fawcett but we unfortunately don’t include everyone each year.” She added: “There are many angles that are looked at as to who to include and unfortunately we don’t include everyone.”…
Bruce Davis, the executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said days before the show that producing the segment is the toughest to do and his committee always has to make some tough cuts.
“It is the single most troubling element of the Oscar show every year,” he said. “Because more people die each year than can possibly be included in that segment.” His office keeps a running list of those who have passed away since last year’s segments which he and a small committee whittle down from more than 100 names to about 30. “You are dropping people who the public knows. It’s just not comfortable.”
[From Radar Online]
Well now that we’ve seen the overlong Oscars and heard their explanation for cutting people from the memorial segment we know that their priority is not the audience. They have their own agenda and will honor the people they see fit. I would much rather have seen a few more moments of memorial clips than all of the industry specific awards like costume design, makeup, sound editing and sound mixing. They’re never going to cut those, but they’ll easily cut beloved actors and actresses from the memorial clip in order to save time. Next year there will be even less people willing to sit through that bloated ceremony.
Oh, and another thing, I’m having trouble finding videos of the Oscars because they’re being pulled due to copyright claims. And Oscar.com only offers a highlight video, backstage “thank you” cam, and red carpet footage.
But they can include some guy whose credit was “Public Relations” whom everyone stopped clapping for… but not Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur??
I wish they had been there, too, but even though they were involved with films, they were both primarily known as television actresses. Maybe that’s why? (Don’t ask me about why MJ was there, though . . . )
Those were terrible omissions, plain and simple. No, you can’t include everyone, but sometimes common sense should rule the day. And as a side note, FF was a truly beautiful woman. Just beautiful.
@adleisia seriously! and that stupid tribute to horror was super long…they couldn’t have shortened *that* by 15 seconds instead? Grr!!!
Farrah should of been included before Jacko the child molester.
Disrespectful. Another reason to skip the broadcast next year.
I hadn’t realized either had been forgotten, but that’s terrible!!! I realize they were both more TV actresses, but they were also both Hollywood icons.
they dissed maude? MAUDE? no, that is so wrong.
Inexcusable. That’s not a snub, that’s insulting.
So they thought Michael Jackson deserved to be in the Memoriam and NOT Bea or Farrah??? Someone explain that logic to me – really Michael Jackson???
There is no excuse for “eliminating” Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcett. Totally unacceptable that they include people the viewing public has never (or rarely) heard of, but not two icons like Bea and Farrah.
Those who have made a serious (or comic, for that matter) contribution to the movie industry deserve to be included in the memorial collage/segment. If they must shorten something, shorten something else. EVERYONE who died and is beloved by the viewing public deserves at least a picture or two in the collage or segment or whatever they choose to name it.
P.S. Nicole Richie dressing like Maude at a holiday party is NOT a tribute to Bea Arthur!
@ Linda – Someone on another site mentioned that Michael Jackson was in the Wiz, and therefore deserved the mention – can you BELIEVE that?!?
People get so upset about these In Memoriam things. Unless you’re a relative of the deceased, I don’t understand the level of outrage.
Like death itself, the death montages are random and arbitrary and there’s no sense in asking why.
That’s my deep thought for the day.
Hmmmm, they could have cut the lameass actor-to-actor speeches for the Best Actor nominees (I seriously hate those and cringe at the horrible writing as well as the stilted delivery – except for Colin who did really well with Jeremy’s speech), the lameass interpretive dance stuff (it was fine for the first 60 seconds but then it was the same rolls, jumps, whatever over and over), the horror montage (if you aren’t going to honor it with an award, don’t patronize the genre with a montage), and the stupid and horribly long opening comedy act. Also, I would have been happy to forgo the Paranormal spoof.
And while I’m sure it is tremendously difficult to decide who goes into the montage, I would think including a woman who was once the most famous woman in the world (Farrah) and a woman who was once revered as one of the greatest wits in Hollywood (Bea) would be a no brainer over some of the people that were chosen this year.
Maybe they will be mentioned at the Emmy’s and maybe Bea at the Tony’s??? I can understand Michael Jackson b/c he has been in films and he is an icon. To leave Bea and Farrah off the list was ridiculous…like they could not have added 10 extra seconds? They could have cut off some of those weird montages or speeches….horror is one of my favorite genre’s but since when was Twilight a horror movie? It should not have been included…
@ElizabethM – I thought maybe I was the only one who cringed at those speeches! They are so incredibly awkward. I hope they leave that out next year. I did like the part where all of the nominees were onstage together though. Nice to see them all together and give them a round of applause.
They just shouldn’t have not included 2 people who nearly everyone knew who they were no matter how relevant they thought they were.
Did they include Patrick Swayze? i dont remember seeing him either.
And I think the ‘time constraint’ excuse doesn’t make so much sense when they showed some actors more than once (Britney Murphy). I distinctly remember them showing her picture more than once.
The Burning Bed was a really important movie too! Shame!
I didn’t bother watching the Oscars this year…so for reals they had MJ in the memoriam section? Wow. I could have justified this by saying these were TV actresses maybe thats why they didn’t get put in at movie award show, but heck if MJ was there Farrah and Bea should have been there as well.
@Brenda: Patrick Swayze was first. That’s why Demi Moore introduced it… and they were playing the song from Ghost as she walked out. They def paid tribute there.
Patrick was the first one they showed, but he was in the background (shot focused on James Taylor starting to sing).
I’m sorry…TCM ALWAYS has a concise list of people in their memoriam and it’s ALWAYS elegant…and I don’t EVER remember it being more than 3 minutes long…
Why don’t they just say…”we’re trifiling…” The end…
What a shame. Esp Bea Arthur. They remember Britney Murphy who starred in practically nothing and forget Bea and Farrah?! Unacceptable!
I can only think of one movie that Micheal Jackson was in and that was “The Wiz” . Farrah Fawcett has done mostly television, but she was in a few films. As for Bea Arthur, she was in “Auntie Mame” with Lucille Ball as well as other films. To not mention the two of them but mention MJ who was known mostly for his music makes no sense.
What I find most offensive is Demi not acknowledging her co-star Swayze. Would have killed her to say one sentence? They did show Patrick first but it didn’t get panned onto the viewers at home. So I think we didn’t get to see Patrick nor Karl Malden.
They snubbed James Whitmore who was an extraordinary character actor. Unless he was one on the first ones. Also Ricardo Maltoban (sp?) got snub too. This guy was also had a movie career spanning DECADES!!
I feel folks should not get so worked up over this, both ladies to very nice tributes on the SAG Memoriam and the Emmy Awards memoriam. Please check youtube for those clips. They were done very nice.
They also forgot Dominic Dunne, he was better known for writing for Vanity Fair but prior to Vanity Fair he was a producer in television and films..Panic In Needle Park and a few others I forget..shame I loved him and would flip to his diary as soon as my copy arrived
According to an academy spokesperson, they didn’t have time to include everybody…not even FARRAH FAWCETT???
She was an ICON! Absolutely no excuse for her leaving her out.
Don’t worry they will honor them at the Academy of Country Music Awards, obviously. The Oscars are known for their perfect timing, to add an additional 40 seconds would have ruined their reputation for never going over their allotted time.
In regards to the speeches a lot of them were not great, better than last year when previous winners talked about each nominee. This year it was at least people with had worked with them, instead of drawing from a hat or whatever they did. But I really liked the speech to Morgan Freeman. “A friend brings the other person coffee.”
OMG! This was soo rude! I mean..they’re both big stars, how could they not include them? The only people they included who were actually famous were brittany and michael..who cares about those stupid directors, producers, writers and all that sorta crap?
Hi there….
How about we all stop complaining and do something about this travesty, so it doesn’t happen again?
I work for another website, and upon reading this article and many others online over the last few days (along with tons of reader comments), i think we all can affect change. Why don’t we start an online campaign to keep the Stars We List reel ONLY for stars! Let’s face it, the awards show is put on for the VIEWING audience, the most important part if the award show us that a worldwide audience watches. I highly doubt that anyone outside of the Academy gave two shits about that PR guy (except maybe his family).
And whole we’re at it, let’s tell them it’s time to SHORTEN the live broadcast by removing the technical awards that are still given out there (sound mixing, sound editing, visual effects….). Just doing that can erase a good half hour from the show. They can still be given at the ceremony, but before the live broadcast begins (the Grammy’s have been doing this for years). Again I say, there is no one (other than the winners families) who really cares about those awards.
I, for one, am really angry that they didn’t include Gene Barry as well as Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcett! He was a great actor as well as a TV icon from the early days. He had several series, Bat Masterson was one of my favorites from when I was a kid, as well as acting in movies, yet they didn’t include him either. WHAT THE HELL? They include a frigging child molester who was in one movie but not actors? I do not get this!
We lost a wonderful talent this year….Bea Arthur. The Oscar’s might have forgotten Bea but I haven’t.
I found this clip of Miss Arthur’s final interview with Bea discussing her career in her own words. The clip also shows Betty White, Carol Channing and Phyllis Diller. I think it’s for a show called, “Lunching with a Legend.”
I’d hate for a full interview with Bea or the other legendary ladies in the clip to go unseen.
