Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper gave a joint interview to The Daily Mail over the weekend to promote their work with MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam line, the line which all of the proceeds go to AIDS charities. The two ladies talked a lot about makeup and AIDS and sex (full piece here), but there was part of the interview that stood out to me – Lady Gaga talking about her own celibacy, and how she wants kids to know that being celibate is cool:
Gaga on protecting yourself: “I can’t believe I’m saying this – don’t have sex. I’m single right now and I’ve chosen to be single because I don’t have the time to get to know anybody. So it’s OK not to have sex, it’s OK to get to know people. I’m celibate, celibacy’s fine.”
It’s all about a woman’s right to choose: “Something I do want to celebrate with my fans is that it’s OK to be whomever it is that you want to be. You don’t have to have sex to feel good about yourself, and if you’re not ready, don’t do it…And if you are ready, there are free condoms given away at my concerts when you’re leaving!”
No peer pressure: “I remember the cool girls when I was growing up. Everyone started to have sex. But it’s not really cool any more to have sex all the time. It’s cooler to be strong and independent.”

I totally agree with Gaga, so I’m a little shocked right now. I actually think abstinence programs would have a much higher success rate if they approached sex education and abstinence education like Gaga just did. Don’t tell kids, “Don’t have sex, ever, period, the end, Jesus will hate you if you have sex, so don’t.” Go the Gaga route – tell kids, “People mix up being sexually active with their confidence in themselves, they do things to be liked, they do things to be grown up, but it’s cool if you don’t feel like it. And when you do, here are condoms.” Smart! Gaga loves her little celibate monsters.
Abstinence has been the best for me. Lady Gaga thumb up.
Cyndi looks so vanilla beside Gaga.I admire them both. But Gaga is probably too busy/exhausted to have sex-is that the same as celibacy? Maybe the outfits make it hard for potential suitors to approach-they’d need a crowbar, chisel and a vat of makeup remover to get past the outfits.

I don’t know what she is doing to her face, but she looks more and more like a Drag Queen (an *actual* Drag Queen) everytime I see her. Maybe, that’s what she wants, there is certainly nothing wrong with it… I just think she looked prettier with more feminine features.. Ugg. Over her already!
I hope that she can make celibacy a cool alternative in the eyes of teenagers.

I admire Lady Gaga for her performance-art-style music, and for her costume-y public fashion, but the thing about this woman that made me really admire her – not just think, “what a cool, quirky chick” – is that she draws a clear line between private/public life, and she’s very open about the fact that she’s wild, crazy and fun, but not out of control. She’s thoughtful, articulate, confident and unafraid to deviate from the norm – even when it means refusing to buy into stereotypes about sex and popularity.
So I say – what a cool, quirky chick. I hope little girls are paying as much attention to what she says as to what she wears.

She has no private life – she’s ALWAYS working. She probably also can’t stand the fact that even if she goes to some remote beach with a man, that the damn papps are following her and the next morning, headlines say: Gaga Looks Fug at the Beach! And that’s only if the man doesn’t sell the story and do interviews about her favorite sex position. So she has no choice, really.

I totally believe this. Despite her procvlity toward explicitness, there’s something oddly asexual and hard about her. Ironically, I don’t immediately associate her with sex. Weird, huh?
Used to be that girls didn’t want to be the loose chick who gave it up, now there’s an inherent shame for many American girls who DON’T have sex. Too often their choice to have sex doesn’t come from a place of maturity and empowerment. I’m glad that Gaga is choosing to say this.

I’m 24 years old and I’m a virgin simply because I haven’t met the right guy yet. Not waiting til marriage, just waiting for the right guy.
However, if both parties agree to no strings attached sex, like one night stands or friends with benefits, I see NOTHING wrong with that AS LONG AS THEY USE PROTECTION AND PROTECT THEMSELVES. Some people don’t need to have an emotional connection to have sex. So I just don’t see that as wrong, like I said, as long as you use protection and be safe and smart about things. Otherwise, you’re just being stupid.
Any kind of sex is fine with me as long as it’s safe sex and consensual on both ends. And are old enough and mature enough to handle it.

that is not daring fashion, not all out there fashion involves you showing more skin than is necessary and that tends to be what she goes for in order to distract us from the fact that her “music” is crap.

No, I don’t think that people would be as supportive as Prejean and Palin virtually stink of hypocrrisy with their holier-than-thou proselytizing. Gaga isn’t attempting to be a moral compass. Plus, I’m sure that Gaga would support comprehensive sex ed. Prejean probably doesn’t, and we all know that Palin’s idea of sex ed is “just say no”. And we witnessed how well that shit went down in her own household.
I think people should disrupt complaining near lady gaga´s meat prettify and move torment near grouping starving…
