Poor Jessica Simpson's fat and lonely

Jessica Simpson still looks pretty good when she's not wearing ill-advised black sack dresses. Star Magazine claims she's gained 20 pounds, though, and even fan site Sweetkisses.net says she's sporting a fuller figure. She still looks gorgeous and what's wrong with a starlet who's a size 8?

While The National Ledger claims Star Magazine says that Jessica is dating newly single Scrubs star Zach Braff and that she's seen him on both the East and West coast, The Scoop reports that the same article has Jessica fending off his advances:

The recently divorced “Newlyweds” star seemed “put off” by the advances of the “Scrubs” star at a recent event at the Pink Elephant in the Hamptons, according to the new issue of The Star. “He was flirting up a storm and being very aggressive,” a source told the tab. “You could tell it grossed out Jess and her friends. He was like a horny schoolboy.”

In fact, none of the string of hotties the former “Newlyweds” star has been linked with is panning out. She “blindsided” her “Employee of the Month” co-star, Dane Cook, by calling him on June 22 and saying they should go their separate ways, according to the Star. Spokespeople for the two have denied that they were ever an item, but gossips insist that they’ve secretly dated. And Simpson’s fling with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine has apparently flopped.

“Jessica is lonely and needy,” a source tells Star. “She’s having a hard time dealing with the fact that [ex-husband] Nick [Lachey] is in love [with MTV’s Vanessa Minnillo].”

It's too bad that she's single and lonely, but she let Nick slip through her fingers and maybe she'll be more mature about her relationships in the future.

In the August UK edition of Ok! Magazine, Jessica says she loves her curves and that she enjoys eating. She also says that she does Pilates to stay in shape and that she doesn't want to bulk up like former wrestling star Chyna. (That's a myth since weight training helps you stay slender and toned, and is a more effective way to shape your body than aerobics.)

Here is Jessica in Ok! and in an ad for her handbag and shoe line. [via]

The years have not been kind to Shannen Doherty

It must be very stressful to be an out of work celebrity who has to resort to hosting second rate reality shows on little-known cable networks. I saw these photos of Shannen Doherty promoting her new show on Oxygen in which she helps couples split up or something, and thought, "OMG, how old is she?" Doherty is 35, but looks 45. She's just aged terribly. Of course she looks good in the airbrushed promo photos for the series.

Doherty held a press conference to announce her new show, and got all upset when asked about her reputation:

The actress, who began her career at age 9 and became as infamous as she was famous when she starred on "90210" for her diva and bad-girl ways, became emotional when she was asked if her goal of helping people had anything to do with cleaning up her image.

"I'm not going to lie to you; it hurts a lot to read the stuff I read about myself, and it hurts me and it hurts my mom a lot," said Doherty, who choked back tears as she looked at her mother, who was nearby. Doherty acknowledged she had only herself to blame for much of what had been written about her, but she later asked reporters to give her another chance.

"I hate to use the word 'unfair' because, again, I have to stand up and say it wasn't just the press," she said. "I played a huge part, a huge part, and everybody has a job. And if I'm creating some of the drama, then you guys have a job to report it.

"But where I start to say 'OK, now we're getting out of hand' is when nobody lets it die," she said. "Nobody says, 'You know what? She was young. Give her a break.' Give me a chance to mess up again. Stop writing about stuff that happened 10 years ago. Stop bringing up every bad thing in my life. And give me another chance to mess up. If I mess up again, then write about it. But just let me breathe and let my parents breathe. Let them pick up the paper and it says one nice thing about me."

You got it, Shannen. We are moving on to the fact that you said you have been on only one date in the last 18 months and have reached a time in your life when you can declare: "I don't need a man to make me happy."

Looking fit in a strapless black top and white slacks and refreshingly her age (read: no Botox), Doherty 'fessed up about something else regarding her show. She is not selling herself as an authority on relationships.

"I think an expert doesn't mess up nearly as many times as I have," she said. "I think that I'm good with getting over relationships. I'm good with dealing with the guilt, the tears and the mourning and the grief because God knows I've done it enough."

That's too bad that Doherty hasn't dated in so long and maybe this show will help her hook up with a new guy. She doesn't look "refreshingly her age," though. She looks 7-10 years older. Am I right or am I just accustomed to the Botoxed plastic look?

Ashley Judd reveals her lousy treatment for depression

In this month's issue of Glamour, Ashley Judd did her duty as a B-list celebrity and revealed potentially embarassing details about her personal life. She said that she underwent in-patient treatment for depression after succumbing to pressure from employees at the facility that was treating her sister, country star Winona Judd, for a food addiction:

Ashley Judd says she spent 47 days in a Texas treatment facility for depression and other emotional problems, in an interview in Glamour magazine.

"I needed help," the 38-year-old actress tells the magazine in its August issue. "I was in so much pain."

Judd, the daughter of country music star Naomi Judd, says she entered the Shades of Hope Treatment Center in Buffalo Gap in February for "codependence in my relationships; depression, blaming, raging, numbing, denying and minimizing my feelings."

"But because my addictions were behavioral, not chemical, I wouldn't have known to seek treatment. At Shades of Hope, my behaviors were treated like addictions. And those behaviors were killing me spiritually, the same as someone who is sitting on a corner with a bottle in a brown paper bag."

Judd says she was visiting her sister, singer Wynonna Judd, who was being treated for food addictions.

"When (the counselors) approached me about treatment, they said, `No one ever does an intervention on people like you. You look too good; you're too smart and together. But you (and Wynonna) come from the same family so you come from the same wound.' No one had ever validated my pain before. It was so profound," she says.

We all have issues that could benefit from therapy, and I enjoyed nice outpatient visits with a kind woman who usually took my side when I told stories about my lousy ex-boyfriend. It sounds like Judd was brainwashed, though. Listen to how she explains "therapy:"
"My behaviors were treated like addictions. And those behaviors were killing me spiritually, the same as someone who is sitting on a corner with a bottle in a brown paper bag."

This sounds like a bullshit, oversimplified way to view one's issues. There are lots of different schools of thought and accompanying therapies that can be effective, but treating everything like an addiction is not something I learned about in grad school. It's based on the Alcoholics Anonymous model of dependency, which may be a semi-effective, albeit controversial, way to treat addictions, but is not a really constructive way to work through one's emotional issues.

If it worked for Judd that's great, but treating one's emotional problems under the umbrella of addiction can be woefully inadequate and ineffective.

I attended a few years of graduate school for psychology before ending up in IT just before the Internet boom, so I sort of know what I'm talking about. My preferred form of therapy is cognitive behavioral, which helps change your outlook by systematically changing your behaviors. The most famous cognitive therapist is Albert Ellis, and the most practical book I've read on the subject is "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David Burns, which I would highly recommend if you're a bit depressed or having trouble getting out of a slump. (If you're depressed, get help from a therapist and/or go on medication. There's no shame in it.)

It sounds like Ashley Judd got convinced by the staff at her sister's facility that it would be great if she checked in. They probably realized how good it would be for their PR if they were able to "treat" two of the sort-of-famous Judd sisters.

Here is Ashley Judd at a Cartier party in early June with Selma Hayek, and at the Indianapolis 500 celebration in late May with her husband, Scottish racecar driver Dario Franchitti. Judd, 38, has been married to Franchitti, 33, since 1999. The couple divides their time between Tennessee and Scotland.

Breaking: Jennifer Aniston isn't wearing black in public; has no future in film

Jennifer Aniston must be able to take an oft-repeated hint, because she attended the LA premiere of "The Break Up" wearing a color other than black. She chose a formfitting white and beige tube dress that looked gorgeous on her. Is this the start of Aniston's comeback? Maybe, but it's doubtful.

The NY Post repeats a report from Hollywood Elsewhere writer Jeffrey Wells, who says that "The Break Up" has not been well received in initial audience tests, and Aniston's status as box office poison may soon be cemented. The Post say that Wells may be misinterpreting the data, but Wells says that Page Six threatened to reveal his source for the tracking numbers of the film, which is despicable.

Wells explains the film's tracking numbers, which help predict a film's box office potential:

Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston's romantic discord comedy, isn't tracking. With only twelve days to go before opening, that means the game is pretty much over. Definite interest is at 30, 1st choice is 5...it's finished. I'm told that while audiences enjoy Vaughn in an off-the-wall mode, they don't want to see him in semi-romantic parts. This is bad news for Aniston also because now she's 0 for 4 -- Derailed, Rumor Has It , Friends with Money and now this thing. She's all but kaput as a big-screen, big-bucks player. She's not particularly sexy, not perky, not a gifted comedienne...and she always seems to play parts in an introspective, low-energy way. I'm not deriving any joy from saying this, but Aniston is probably one or two steps away from competing with Helen Hunt for HBO roles.

That's not really news about Aniston, considering that all of her movies have sucked and she's pretty much disliked by everyone. If only she could keep her mouth shut. She blabbed to Britians' Mirror that there are couples who should break up. She also said even more crap about Brad and Angelina:

"People are very lazy and it's very easy," she says. "Things are just more disposable. There's not a lot of value put on relationships."

"Who knows if people should have stayed in relationships? My parents certainly shouldn't have stayed married - and they didn't. Other people have stayed married ... and they shouldn't have."

Then she adds, somewhat wryly: "You have to put a lot of work into it and exhaust every option before you split up."

The end of Brad and Jennifer's five year marriage last year - presumably after every option had been exhausted - saw the Troy star hook up with Angelina Jolie, his co-star on the movie, Mr and Mrs Smith.

The drama of the split played out over several months with Jennifer grieving in the privacy of her Malibu home comforted only by her elderly dog, Norman.

She underwent therapy but refused to discuss her feelings in public except to say she was "shocked" when she saw newspaper photographs of Brad and Angelina frolicking on an African beach.

"I wasn't aware of a lot that was going on between them [Brad and Angelina] because it was easier not to pay attention to it," she says. "So much of it was fabricated and I felt it was creating unnecessary suffering to even go into that world at all.

"I wish there was a way to get used to it, but it was a weird time."

That's perfectly natural and understandable, and people would care if they hadn't heard it from Aniston over and over again. How surprising that Aniston doesn't have a successful film career. People must not like sour grapes - go figure!

Here she is at the LA premiere of "The Break Up" last night. Her poses looked forced and awkward on the red carpet, but at least she changed her look. It seems like it's too late for poor Aniston, though.

Teri Hatcher cries while giving a speech about her childhood abuse

Teri Hatcher broke down and cried at a press conference in Beverly Hills yesterday. She cohosted the press conference with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to announce the 3rd annual Women's World Awards. Gorbachev seemed more interested in her breasts than what she was saying.

Hatcher got emotional when talking about the sexual abuse she suffered as a child:

“Recently I had the honor, really, of being able to come forward and help raise awareness of some violence against women..."

She was referring to a recent Vanity Fair interview in which she said she was molested by her uncle when she was 5 years old and living in Sunnyvale. When she learned in 2002 that a 14-year-old victim of her uncle had committed suicide, Hatcher approached Santa Clara County prosecutors.

After Hatcher came forward, the uncle, Richard Hayes Stone, pleaded guilty to four counts of child molestation in the case of the 14-year-old victim and received 14 years in prison.

“There are many women who suffer with these traumatic experiences their whole lives, and they keep those things a secret,” Hatcher said, her eyes welling with tears. “They spend some of their lives feeling that the fault of things that have happened to them was something that they caused.

“These experiences ... leave us with a choice, a choice to use our experiences to enlighten and empower and change people’s lives, and that is a choice I am getting behind.”

You can hardly blame her for crying, and it's brave of her to speak out. We were going to point out that she looks like Janice Dickinson here, but considering the sensitivity of the topic that would be cruel.

Three more pictures after the jump.
